Movies that don't hold up

The Star Wars sequel trilogy isn't going to hold up. Particularly 9 I think. It had thoroughly failed its diverse cast by then, making their casting look like a cynical ploy.

Did many people even like 9 to begin with? I don't know anyone who likes that one.

That's true. I think the other two had plenty of fans that it may have lost, but that isn't a case of not holding up so much as it a case of a sequel blowing it, and that mostly happened on arrival. I do believe that the use (and lack of use) of its diverse cast across the trilogy will look worse over time though.

It has an 85% or so audience rating in RT but in real life I still haven't met anyone who liked that movie.

I generally enjoy old/older movies a lot more than anything produced today. I notice if stuff has aged a bit and people think differently today. But films in general were a lot more enjoyable in the 70-80s and even just 20 years ago.
That’s because most everything nowadays are sequels, remakes, franchises, etc. There’s not a lot of originality in Hollywood

Rise of Skywalker really was a mess. As divisive as The Last Jedi was, it still has its fans. You'd be hard pressed to find much love at all for Episode 9 by comparison.

However, I can see there being a lot of sequel trilogy love ten years or so down the line thanks to the future adults who grew up with them as kids, just like the prequels and even the original trilogy before it.

Yeah people will be talking about Luke, Han, and Leia with reverence until the end of time. I don’t see that happening with this new trio, and not because of bigots who don’t like diversity in their SW. There are definitely pockets of passionate fans but I think the overall consensus is a shrug.

My only problem with 9 was it was too short and obviously they didn't have a bigger budget to play with.

I’ll be honest that I thought it was odd that people were comparing this to the 81/2 musical starring Daniel Day Lewis for half this thread.

There's a reason so many people loved The Mandalorian, and specifically the finale for season 2. Luke Skywalker is as much an icon of heroism as Superman for an entire generation. Getting even one brief moment of that was like water in a desert. Same reason why Superman & Lois gets so much love.

I feel like all three entries had problems. The first one just copied the format of ANH but people overlooked it because it wasn’t god-awful like all the prequels. The second one broke the format a bit but people didn’t like the way they handled Luke and also it was just a weird low-speed chase through space. And the third one tried way too hard to win fans back after the divisive second film but ended up just feeling like a video game. So disappointing.
