I recently re-watched Ghostbusters and the thought occurred to me, how many movies over the years have been set in NYC? And I mean NYC passing as itself (even if the movie wasn't actually shot on location) - not NYC passing as another real or fictional city (STM, TDKR).

I'll start off:
- Ghostbusters
- Taxi Driver
- Spider-Man trilogy / The Amazing Spider-Man
- The Adjustment Bureau

So how many more movies are there? I know there are tons.... :)

None of the spider-man films have been shot in NYC. TASM 2 is going to be the 1st.

About 60% of films in the past 20 years that were set in new york were likely filmed in toronto. In some of the films they didn't even bother to remove the CN tower in shots.

They've been shooting parts all of the Spider-Man films in NYC. The last two were filming right near my office in midtown.

The train fight in SM2 was Chicago in a few shots, and they only used the exteriors of the Broadhurst Theatre for Mary Jane's show in SM3 (the interiors were a theater in LA), but there's a ton of shooting done in NY for the Spider-Man films.

Too many to count. Though they've been using Chicago moreso as of late for some reason.

Probably a lot.

NYC is the iconic place to set fiction, that's just how it is. People from all over the world can name at least one landmark or trait of the city.

Gremlins 2
Escape From New York

It's shameful that nobody has mentioned Leon the Professional. Also:

Once Upon a Time in New York
American Psycho
A Bronx Tale
The Wackness
Gangs of New York

I Am Legend
Arthur
Sex and the City 1 & 2
American Gangster
13 Going On 30
The Secret of My Success
The Muppets Take Manhattan

what NO love for Men In Black trilogy ;)?

Basically most disaster movies, superhero movies, gritty cop movies, vacation movies, you name it. I think it's used so much because it is kind of the center of the United States if not the world at large. From a writing stand-point it comes in from questioning where to set a story so that most people know where it is and that first jump is to NYC.

A lot of TDKR was shot in NY. Even though it's Gotham not NY. But Gotham is a nickname for NY. Nolan has called Gotham "NY on steroids".

The Incredible Hulk comes to mind.

Too many...

Gangs of New York
Superman The Movie
Saturday Night Fever
Fame
All That Jazz
The Secret of My Success
Moscow on the Hudson
Planet of the Apes
American Gangster
Once Upon a Time in America
Goodfellas
Serpico
Dog Day Afternoon
Carlito's Way
Devil's Advocate
Marathon Man
Raging Bull
New York, New York
The King of Comedy
Shaft
Do the Right Thing
Turk 182!
