Hey gang,

Inspired by spill.com's podcast A Couple of Cold Ones.

This is the thread where 30 years from now, you can look back at movies from the 2000s (2000-2009), where you go "Man, that was sooooo 2000s".
It could be film style, trends, bands, technology. Whatever... The rise of directors like Edgar Wright and Chris Nolan. The rise of remakes. The use of bad digital cameras. Anything that will make a certain movie from that decade 'dated' even if it's a small thing that you wouldn't normally notice. Now most are bad, but be sure to include good things too.

Example:

Film Style:
Shaky camera. "What were they thinking?"

General: The fall of Fox Studios' quality control & the rise of comic book movies.

Actors: The Frat Pack, The Apatow Gang

Tattoos: Tramp Stamp. "So 2002!"

Tech: Flip phones. (Watching a movie from 2007) "The main hero doesn't even have a touch screen on his cell!"

Bands/Music: Macy Grey in Spider-Man. (Shakes in head in shame) I think even back then, it was already dated when the movie came out.

Style: The Paris Hilton/Brittney Spears look (with toy dog).

The 'Ed Hardy' or Affliction look, mostly associated with people who like MMA or from the Jersey Shore! *****e!

Emo.

Hipster/Indie (Shame on me because I'm more associated to this crowd! Keep in mind, this might be debatable because hipsters have been around since the dawn of time anyway. Now they just have a name. But I think the ' 1992 rat tail' hipster is more dated than the '1970s/1980s flannel hipster anyday)

The goddamn PG-13 rating being stamped where it doesn't belong for one thing.

While the 3D trend was picking up steam already, it was Avatar that convinced studios to greenlight nonsense like 3D Men And A Baby (okay, not yet...but you know they're considering it)....so this next decade will be known for that kind of nonsense.

I do see the remake trend being a stain on 2000-2009, even though it's only just begun...and of course superheroes.

Also, Torture Porn (or whatever you want to call it...as a Horror fan, I find nothing wrong with it)

Mission Impossible II

Quantum of Solace

The Taking of Pelham 123

All Fast and Furious movies

The Saw films

^ these movies give me that feeling already :/

Avatar is so 2005. :o

Shaky cam ain't bad, but I feel overused. And no, I still haven't seen Bourne 3 cause of it.

Anything that takes a standard movie concept (superhero, spy, etc.) and injects it with an unneeded dose of what people assume is "realism" and takes all the fun out of the concept.

I cant think of a single example of this.

Batman Begins, TDK, Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace.

now, I know what you're saying because are you also talking about quality? Whether if its fantastical or realistic, your 'fun' comment is debatable.

I consider the first three movies you listed their to be incredibly fun and also think they are very true to their source material/ 'concept'.

The last one I did not care for, but don't think it alone creates its own category, though it does feel very "2000s".

I would say that B and especially TDK are going to age very well in my opinion so they do not belong in this thread.

Both Aliens Vs Predator movies maybe.... Especially if after the new solo movies turn out to be good, the two AVPs will be like "what were they thinking" moments

The seemingly endless Kate Hudson romantic comedies.

The seemingly endless Kate Hudson romantic comedies.
Or how about the endless romantic comedies in general? And not good ones.

Oh and also......bad remakes

Indie comedies with a lot of "hip" dialogue like Juno. I like that movie, and some others like it, but I'm pretty sure that kind of writing will be "so 2000s" in five or ten years.

Lense flare.
Shaky cam.
Shaky cam and Lense flare.
Mobile phones incoporated into the plot.

My 'fun' comment is subjective, and therefore I need not defend it. "Quality" in my opinion, means nothing to how "good" a movie is, if I'm not entertained, if I'm not having fun, it's not a good movie for me. All of the movies I mentioned stopped being fun after the first viewing.

I don't find them to be fun at all, they took themselves far too seriously for their subject matter. This trend of taking things that don't need it that seriously is very 2000's for me, and I really hope that the trend has ended because it flat out sucks and speaks volumes of fans and creators who are ashamed of what they like.

Every character being full of heavily ironic and flippant, sarcastic dialogue. Or to put it another way, everybody talking liek they did in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
