What movies have you seen that made you wonder what the MPPA were smoking?

Movies that were PG-13:

Beowulf- Yeah, I know it was toned down but still, Grendel tears people in half, bites their head off, Beowulf pops out of an eye, and guts fly towards the screen.

Live Free or Die Hard- Again, even though this was toned down it was still very brutal.

Cloverfield- Although very quick, this has quite a bit of gore for a PG-13, ecspecially Marlena's death and if you slow it down, Hud's death where you can see blood splurt out.

Casino Royale- Very brutal movie. The headshot, the torture scene, the nail to the eye.

Movies that were R:

The Matrix- There is hardly any swearing and the only bloody part is when Neo is shot and that is really quick.

Terminator 3- Only one bloody part which is a quick and besides that nothing R-worthy.

alien vs predator 1, just awful and why was it pg-13??

Prom Night - pg 13 , this is why the horror genre is dead today

I've always wondered why The Matrix was R-rated, myself. I think they just said the s-word a few more times than is normally allowed in a PG-13 movie.

Well, The Matrix has some quite 'intense' scenes and has several shoot-outs.

Actually, you can say s**t till the cows come home in a PG-13 rated movie. My guess is all the shooting, especially the scene where they kill all the security guards.

I can't believe There Will Be Blood was R. There didnt seem to be much swearing, and there wasnt all that much blood, either.

Rush Hour for me, I don't know if you can have that much cussing in a movie and still get a PG-13 now-a-days. I guess you still could, but there was the cop shooting those two bodyguards at pointblank range too, a bit of blood, I remember I saw that with my mom, she nearly screamed at the scene 'cause it was so quick, and it was in front of that little girl, Sooh-Yung!

I know this is a PG-13 or R rated related thread, but sometimes I can't believe Beetlejuice is a PG movie.

Yeah i think that's what grabbed The Matrix's R was all the shooting at the end.

As for There Will Be Blood, I didn't understand it's R rating either. Still a great film though.

Haha. One of the best scenes in the film. Shame it cuts off before it gets to the best gag in the scene.

But yeah i always assumed with dropping the f-bomb atleast once that it was automatically PG-13. But i guess the rules were a just a bit different at the time of it's release.

It was released in 1988, back when the MPAA was still trying to figure out what the rules for PG-13 were. PG-13 was an invention of the 80's, and it was mostly created for violent scenes. Strong language wasn't necessarily something that'd get you a higher rating in those days. Not always, anyway.

I didn't even realized Beetlejuice was PG, they drop the F-bomb, man the rules have changed

PG-13 was invented in 1984. Jaws and Patton were made in the 70s. Those movies were considered too tame for an R rating, and there was nothing between R and PG in those days.

Ahh. Makes sense now. Thanks for clearing that up.

unless you are actually referring to poop than its R.

As for Live Free and Die Hard and Casino Royale are very similar to the other Bond movies. They imply brutality but they arnt really that graphic. The movie This Film is Not Yet Rated the filmmaker believes that these kinds of movies are more destructive not for its graphic nature but because they imply violence without consequence. At least in the first die hard movies there was plenty of blood and pain

The Matrix and T3 - both of them used the f bomb once so it's an automatic R.

The only reason Live Free or Die Hard wasn't R is because they held back the "f" word at the end.

Actually no, in Pg-13 films you get to drop the F-bomb once and only once.

The Matrix is R because of the lobby shootout scene. They just walk in with tons of guns and blow people away -- there isn't a ton of blood but it's very violent.

yeah, you don't want 13 years olds seeing that, yeah I saw the matrix three times in theaters I was ten. I'm perfectly okay

But thats something similar you would see in a Bond movie

I forget what movie it was but the film This Film is Not Yet Rated(HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) shows a lip of Bond(Brosnan) running shooting a bunch of people. No blood.

Hands down the most violent 'family film' is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Indy hits a guy with a saw, for ****'s sake.

You guys do know Gremlins is PG. I mean I understand that because theres not really blood in the movie but to be honest those little creatures would give me nightmares if I was a Kid.

The first AVP movie was rated R for Slime and Gore. What kind of movie gets that rating for SLIME!?!?
