Multiple people killed by gunman at African American church

Several people were killed in a shooting at an historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina, a source close to the investigation told CNN. The shooter is still at large.

The shooting took place Wednesday evening at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest AME church in the South.

Police haven't said how many people have been shot. But the source who spoke to CNN said several bodies were in the church that were yet to be identified.

"It's really bad. It's a very bad scene," local pastor Thomas Dixon said.

"Apparently the person just entered the church and opened fire. That part has not been fully articulated on what happened yet ... they are still looking for the suspect."

Police said the suspect in the shooting is a clean-shaven white man in his 20s, with a slender build. He was wearing a gray sweatshirt, blue jeans and boots.

I think every church in America has Bible study on Wednesday night. I know my aunts church has armed guards, that's the f'd up world we live in. I hope they find him.

Not sure what you mean. The shooter hasn't been caught yet, that's a description telling people to keep an eye out for him and call the cops with any info leading to his arrest.

Its the cops, not the media, who are saying this is a hate crime.

On top of the usual trauma from surviving an ordeal like this there is the added crisis of faith that some of those people will suffer. So not only did this scum take lives and ruin lives but, he may have destroyed the faith of some.

As a curious anecdote, social psychology research over the last 100 years or so have consistently indicated that violence and aggression increase systematically as economic conditions deteriorate.

Wow... when they said "hate crime" I assumed they meant the racial element, but hadn't yet considered that it could alternately (or additionally) be religiously/anti-religiously motivated. Yikes.

It has to be hate of some kind even if he is mentally ill. You don't walk into a church full of black people and start shooting without some sort of hatered in you. Either for black people or Christians.

Sorry to break it to you, but you were never safe there. A gun-wielding nut isn't going to abolish his plan because of the location. Churches, schools, movie theaters, they were never completely safe. It just took a while for an event to occur.
