$#*! My Dad Says

The difference is, the shows you mention, with the exception of Seinfeld make you feel for the characters. They have heart. This one was void of that. Seinfeld didn't have heart but that was kinda the point.

But the biggest problem is, that the one liners just aren't that funny. You get the watered down stuff from the blog and a fex sexual innuendos.

I can agree with the first part. The show will need to work more on making us concerned about Ed building a relationship with his son. They tried to move that along by humanizing Ed a bit by getting the mattress. Recall as the the son is talking to his brother&wife in the kitchen that he just wanted a 'gesture'. Ed then even calls it 'just a gesture' in an exasperated manner as if to say "I try to show love&caring, why can't they see it when I do it?". Indicating perhaps that they both may think alike and be alike than they thought. At least that was my take away. Still, lots more of that to do though I agree.

With the exception of Seinfeld and maybe The Office of recent memory most comedies have ample one-liners. That's all the Twitter feed is. Some are going to be more funny than others. The trick will be to make the one liners connect more to the growing personalities of the characters. I think they are going to have at least 7-9 episodes to establish that before its S1 fate is known. Unlike say Lone Star and Outlaw which will likely be cancelled next week.

Wait, they have William Shatner for a show, and they call it "Bleep My Dad Says" and not "Shat my Dad says" sup witdat?

^^^
I've seen another say that. Would probably work if Shatner was playing himself, like Seinfeld. However, he's not and I'm thinking it would seem too satirical if they called it that. His character name is Ed Goodson.

Saw it today. What utter... $#*!

Absolute garbage style of humor. Every line is so obvious and so intentional. It's like they're reading off of prompters. And I can't stand laugh tracks.

I don't even notice laugh tracks when I watch tv.

I'm watching NFL football on CBS and the network wasted no time, as would any network, utilizing that 12.5 million debut.

The ad just ran a clip for the next show with the announcer saying,"William Shatner is America's new favorite dad." *insert clip here* Then followed by the show's banner and the phrase "The #1 New Comedy"

It did debut the highest so that give them claim to #1, I just hope the show does improve to make their first comment worthy as well.

All shows fall off from the pilot though. Remains to be seen how much this one will, but based on the quality of the pilot, it may be a lot.

I do. And it annoys me to no end.

HIMYM is the only show I have watched with one in a long time, and the laugh track almost ruins it for me. The show is funny enough on it's own. It doesn't need that ****.

Ouch, lol sorry to hear that.

Seinfeld used laugh tracks for stuff that wasn't shot in the studio. But they worked because they seemed to use it right if that makes sense.

Other shows it sounds like the same laugh every time and for stuff that isn't really funny at all. It's like they have some guy pushing a button every 5 seconds no matter what is going on.

For what its worth I know somebody who attended a taping of the pilot. They may have indeed peppered in some laugh track but that hardly is proof the show is bad. Hard to find too many comedies who don't utilize that.

HIMYM is overrated imo anyway. Half of that show is a setup for Barney.
I love TBBT but half of that show is set up for Sheldon.
Most of everything done on The Office is to set up Michael.
Loved Seinfeld but half or more of what Kramer,Elaine and George did set up Jerry.

See what I've done? Making your excuses that nearly everything said was to set up Shatner's Ed Goodson invalid as a complaint. :oldrazz:
All I think is that laugh tracks are stupid and distracting, but this show would still be bad even without it.

We'll know soon enough. I'll toss out a number for next week, 10.5 million.
Any takers?

Based on what NBC's comedies did it seems that if $#*! can stabilize at around 7-8 million it'll be safe. TBBT first season had around 7 or so + the competitions shows only brought in viewers of 6-8 million. As long as $#*! can stay at or above that it should make a first season.

Laugh tracks need to go the way of the Dinosaur. I don't need to be prompted to know if something is funny or not.

Not necessarily. This is CBS, they can afford to be picky with their ratings. Last season they canceled three sitcoms that all hovered in the 6-8 million range. Including one that was very well received critically.

In that case lets go ahead and put the promo for 1.2 out there. New $#*! My Dad Says this Thursday at 7:30/8:30c, view the clip at cbs.com.

Be curious to see how the show does in its second outing. Hoping it stays in double digits at least.

A new longer 2min preview clip of the promo version for tonights episode is now available at cbs.com.

"Look who just grew a pair...er pear"

$#*! My Dad Says is all new tonight at 7:30/8:30c, or in just 3.5hrs from now.

Sounds like the jokes are about on par with last week.:whatever:

Guys believe it or not these shows are shot in front of live audiences.

I know its hard to believe but its true. Now are the audiences encouraged and manipulated? Yes they are. But its like we get to see a few show for several hours plus some free goodies and refreshments at times. There's an MC that always warms up and talks with the crowd during all the deadspots.

For exterior sequences they show those to the audiences as well. They are put up on monitors and the reactions from the audience are recorded. Everything is played in sequence sort of like a play.

You guys want to know what show had a FAKE laugh track? Grounded For Life. Single camera sitcom not shot in front of a studio audience with INSERTED LAUGH TRACK.

Fans are just *****y and have double standards about ****. How I Met Your Mother has had it too for 5 years but you all love it and try to pretend its not there.

I've honestly never cared if a show has a laugh track or not. Just not something that bothers me one way or another. I just care about whether a show makes ME laugh (HIMYM) or roll my eyes ($MDS).

Fans are just snobby *****es sometimes. Can't like a show if it has live audience format.

Can't like MASH because it had audience laughter!

Zap2It.com has some numbers already.

$#*! My Dad Says had a 20% drop for viewership of 10.4 million. That is almost spot on of my predict for 10.5 million. It still helped CBS to win the night along with TBBT and Mentalist.

I felt the show was going to have about this type drop. I figured about this many people would have a knee jerk reaction to the uneven pilot. Just glad it wasn't more. Now if the show will begin to stabilize it should end up alright.

I felt last night was a much better, more cohesive episode and flowed more organically from situation to situation.

Waiting for those episode 3 promos now.

The new 20 second promo for the third episode is up now.

It has the return of the "nice homosexual from the DMV" in a new occupation. Bet I can guess why. :oldrazz:

$#*! My Dad Says is all new tonight again in just under two hours.

Very curious as to how its viewership retention is for this week. I wasn't surprised by a 20% drop off from the pilot to episode 2. That basically represents those who are willing to give a show a try vs those who have to love it right away.
I'd love to stay above 10 million but could see something like 9.7 or 9.8 being the number for tonight in terms of viewers.

I'm also kind of curious because I like William Shatner and Nicole Sullivan. I think the pilot was uneven but it does have potential.

I know sometimes its the demos, but then again The Big Bang Theory at its start had terrible reviews by elitists and snobby critics and was only doing like 6 or 7 million. After the strike started Big Bang Theory reruns were doing huge ratings though and the show kept climbing when it came back. EW trashed TBBT when it first started and then turned around after it became a hit.

$#*! My Dad Says held much better from episode 2 to episode 3 last night. The break down is as follows.

Pilot = 12.5 million viewers
2nd = 10.4 (20% drop off)
3rd = 9.8 (6% drop off)

The episode was again a marked improvement from episode to episode. They are doing a good job of making Ed just emotional enough to break through the tough hide he shows everyone while keeping the humor there.

Ed - "I want a 12' cuccumber."
Wait staff - "Holla!"
Ed - "I'm not putting that in my mouth."
Wait staff - "Holla!"

This episode actually had me laugh out loud twice which is a good sign for me personally staying behind the show.
