Old boy, I guess it's time to rest those bones for good . . .

Our family dog, Bones is going to doggy heaven today . . . goddam life has been a b**ch this week!!

He's such a sweet, gentle dog; never snapped, or bit anyone . . . he's so gentle, my 1-yr old nephews can feed him treats . . . . he barks when the doorbell rings, and he's massive . . . half yellow lab, half rhodesian ridgeback . . . man, if you have any pets, give them a nice petting for my dog, Bones  :( :( :(

I have 2 cats as well, and he was so amped when I came home with them . . . he's like their big brother . . . they lick his head sometimes . . . and when we got them, they would hide, and the only way we knew where they were was because there was Bones, waiting for them to come out and play . . . must have made him feel like a pup again

take care old boy

Sorry to hear that, man. You have my sympathy. Losing a pet is as hard as losing a family member, because the way I see it, a pet is a family member.

^thanks man . . . I think that's only something real animal lovers understand . . .

he'll be in a better place (off this hell-hole). losing a pet (especially a dog) sucks big time. sorry for your loss...

Bones is 10 1/2 . . . and for a big breed like him, that's actually pretty old . . . but he's in pretty decent health . . . there's nothing visibly wrong with him, and I guess it was a selfish thought to assume he'd live at least 5 more years . . .

he's been coughing and throwing up more and more frequently over the last 2 weeks, and we took him to the vet to learn he's got some kind of ulcer . . .

but they also found a large tumor in his lung . . . and it's better to let him go now than to wait until he can't even move around or worse--not breathe :(

I think I'm gonna leave work early and make him a nice fat steak . . .

I've lost a great many pets over the years and it never gets any easier. One of my jack russel's died last year, and my german shepherd is getting very old herself so I know how you feel. In fact I was thinking about it this morning :( It can be tough. He sounds like a really great dog.

Godspeed, Bones.

This is very similar to what my dog went through - he too was a big breed, and fairly healthy, but he got a tumor in his throat that made it harder and harder to breathe.

Pretty much one of the most depressing things ever to watch.

You have my sympathy. :(

thanks a lot you guys . . . I'm not trying to make a depressing thread here, just that if you knew this dog, you'd know he deserves a nice eulogy :(

Sorry to hear that DV8, must be tough for you... :csad:

yeah, I don't want to remember him sick . . . they said the tumor is very aggressive . . . and he doesn't deserve to be put through that

Sorry to hear that, man. As an owner of 2 old hounds (10 and 11), I'm seriously dreading what you must going through right now. :csad:

you made the right choice. a lot of people rather watch the dog for 2 or 3 more weeks and watch how he dies in big pain.
i dont agree with that. so you made the right choice IMO.

no pain.

Ohhhh I am so sorry to hear that.

Yes it is something only animal lovers understand. I feel for you and your family's loss. And when I get home, I will be giving my dog and 2 cats a little extra squeeze. Except our black cat Ash. She's not affectionate and hates to be held.

Can you post some pics of Bones?

Sorry to hear that. We have 2 labs and are getting a third in 2 weeks. I'm sorry for your loss.

This is truly the worst part about having our hairy canine and feline friends in our lives; losing them. Because they bring so much joy, peace and companionship to our lives, it makes having to let them go one of the hardest things to do. I have lost many best friends thanks to the ravages of time over the course of my life, and am sure I will lose more. Remember Bones fondly and know that none could ever take his place. He loved you and it was his time to move on to bigger adventures. Someday you'll have another dog, but it won't be Bones and you won't want it to be. That will be YOUR new adventure. My condolences, DV8.

I know . . . I see him struggling as arthritis starts to set in for a while now, but whenever the thought crossed my mind, I'd shut it out . . .

we have another little dog, and she's seriously like 20!!! We thought we'd have to put her down first, and then this happens basically out of nowhere :(

exactly . . . my boy is going out on top . . . wouldn't think of letting him suffer . . . he's such a good boy

I don't have any right now, but I'll def try and dig some out, and scan them in . . . what sucks is my family doesn't take a lot of pictures, and the ones we do take are always stored somewhere and forgotten . . .

I drew that pic in the first post of this thread, of Bones though . . . it was for an art school project a few years back . . . looks just like him
