I recently bought my first widescreen tv & then I bought a cheap 50 something dollar surround sound system to hook it up to, one of my DVD players that I hooked up to the surround sound system has normal loud sound but after I hooked my DVD/VCR combo up to it the sound is very poor when playing a dvd through it although when I play a vhs tape through it the sound is very loud & that was just using the standard yellow, red & white cables that came with the player, so what could be the problem? I've bought cable after cable hooking it up in every which way trying to get the sound to come in better but nothing seems to work.

Don't be cheap and spend some real money on a DVD player and a surround sound system.

Sound on combies are always ****, i have one, i watch a dvd and i have to turn the sound pretty high, then when i put the tv back on the sounds blasting out. once i move out i will be getting a proper tv for my dvd player haha

DVD's are also generally mastered at a seemingly lower reference level to give more dynamic headroom...meaning more space to get really loud at parts without adding distortion, whereas much stereo/vhs/TV programming is a bit louder but more compressed, especially through the analog L/R, as opposed to digital coax or optical. But yeah, in general, combination players are going to give up some technical quality for convenience. Louder isn't always better, and it's even harder to tell on a cheaper surround system.

You should be ashamed of yourself for even owning VHS tapes in 2007. God'd probably punishing you for having them.
