My take on how the universe got started.

My best guess is that we're a giant experiment being analyzed by alien scientists. We're lab mice.

I had a similar idea. That I then turned into a story, so I won't share any more of it. :o

When I was in grad school a group of physicists from Fermilab gave an informal luncheon presentation on their latest research. This was years before the Large Hadron Collider at CERN was built, so Fermilab was still at the forefront of research involving particle physics.

Near the end of the presentation, one of the senior scientists described a theory about the potential results of high-energy particle collisions. His group believed that if subatomic particles were accelerated to sufficient speed and then slammed into each other, the force of the collision would cause a tiny but rapidly expanding bubble to branch off from our universe. Within this expanding bubble, another, brand-new baby universe would form, and this infant cosmos would continue to expand into its own dimension, with matter and energy coming into existence within the new space. The laws of the new universe would be dictated by the type of particles used in the collision and the speed at which they were hurled at one another. But even though the scientists who created the new universe in their lab could predict how it would form, they would never be able to peer into their infant cosmos or interact with it in any way since it would constitute a closed system.

This fascinated me, but being the smart-ass I am, I asked the lead researcher one question: "Would the person who switched on the machine and therefore caused the particle collision be the God of the new universe?" Everyone laughed. The physicist said that had never occurred to them, but leave it to a divinity student to think of it. One of my professors said, "Were you hoping to become a goddess, X?" Well, it never hurts to ask. :cwink:

Tl; dr: It is theoretically possible that this universe could very well be the result of a laboratory experiment conducted in another, adjacent universe. And the fun part is, we have no way of knowing for sure.
