"...Researchers are puzzled by what some are calling a "mystery" rock on Mars. Recently spotted in photos taken by the Opportunity rover, the rock seemingly appeared out of thin air, since the object was missing in images captured nearly two weeks earlier."

I believe the simple answer is called "wind."

I hate to ruin the aliens attempts to screw with us but...

“So my best guess for this rock … is that it’s something that was nearby,” said Squyres. “I must stress that I’m guessing now, but I think it happened when the rover did a turn in place a meter or two from where this rock now lies.”

Opportunity’s front right steering actuator has stopped working, so Squyres identified that as the possible culprit behind the whole mystery.

They must think we're sending death-robots to their planet. We are the invaders. That rock was their last defense!

Martians may not exist, but Debbie Downers sure do. :o

Imagine how that rock must feel. It's been sitting there quietly, minding its own business for thirty million years, and suddenly this alien robot runs over it and kicks it seven centimeters to the left.

At least the poor rock was able to knock out one of the robot's wheels. Score one for the Martian resistance!

So they went back to the same spot today,
This just gets weirder... Is that a baby Gorignak?

It's what's left of a shattered bowl of petunias.

Looks more like a hamster to me.....

I wonder how much money they're wasting, to study this amazing happenstance.
