NASCAR sucks.

I've really never understood the attraction to NASCAR. It's mind-numbingly boring to me, save for the occassional fiery wreck. I have a friend who's REALLY into it and I've tried to watch it with him and I just can't stand it. The commentators are one smack in the head away from a drool bucket and it's not nearly as exciting as it's proponents have made it out to be. Still, I have to hand it to the NASCAR folks; as marketers and promoters they have absolutely excelled in making their product a household phenomenon. Then again, American Idol, Britney Spears and Survivor are all extremely popular as well and I find all of those things to be a celebration of mediocrity and banality.

You have to understand that my love for Nascar goes way back. I love Nascar because I grew up around cars. Going to tracks with home built cars, going to deadend strips by Kennedy airports and have guys race for money all this as a kid, you get hooked. It's like in baseball there are steps into getting into Nascar just like little leagues, minors, triple a ball. Nascar is the big leagues. It's hard to explain if you didn't grow up around it.

Honestly though, to each their own. I love baseball and college football, some people don't, and still others like NASCAR...

I don't think there are many people of dignified stature who would collectively view NASCAR as emoting anything of refined taste. It is a rather droll activity that is rather not my style.

NASCAR is the one sport that I swear even going to, can lower one's IQ.
