What species were the pilots in Ronan's fighters? They looked Chiutari to me, but I'm obviously not sure (since I'm starting this thread).

Apparently they are Sakaarans. I initially figured they would be Chitauri, on loan from Thanos since Ronan couldn't use actual Kree soldiers.

They didn't really look Chitauri-esque to me, other than seeming undead. Maybe they are undead Sakaarans?

Well, obviously I had to go off my memory, which was probably wrong. Are undead Sakaarans a thing?

Could they be Sakaaran Natives? The Lego figures have some with insect faces.

This is a cool link that gives some insight. It's concept art for the aliens, including the Sakaarans. I was bothered because I didn't think the Sakaarans looked all that much like Sakaarans (I thought Korath seemed more like them). The best explanation for why they looked so different can be seen when you click on the image for the Sakaaran. If you do that, you see they weren't supposed to be Sakaarans, they're supposed to be Badoon (which they look more like, although certainly adapted for live action). My guess is the Badoon belong to Fox (Fantastic Four? X-Men? Not sure), so they had to be changed.

Remember there were various species of Sakaarans.
I think they were supposed to be the native gray insectoid type.

Looks pretty close to me...
I think they dropped the Badoon because they're saving them for the sequel.

Also, I think the Badoon concept art are the 3 greenish guys you see in that same page, with an extra one showing up in 3d digital render.

As a non-comic book reader, I was pretty disappointed with the Sakaraans. Are they actually important in the comics? In Guardians, they're just faceless drones who serve zero purpose :/

No. They're not important in the comics. They're only relevant in that 1 Hulk storyline.
The Badoons on the other hand are very relevant.
I'm glad they didn't use them for fodder and opted for the insectoid Sakaarans instead.

How did Ronan even get hold of them anyway? I assumed initially he'd work with other crazy Kree

Maybe he bought them? Many Sakaarans were slaves and gladiators, including the insectoids.
He did have one crazy Kree with him, or at least a half Kree: Korath

While on the subject of Ronan and his help: What species were the mothership pilots? I think they were the same species as the "women" that smeared him with the tar like goo and did that ceremonial dressing thing when we first see him.

Marvel doesn't have the rights for the Badoon...

you don't know that for sure.
have haven't been given a definitive breakdown of what's included in each IP
