Comics Need advice

FURYoftheSTORM

Guest
I used to be a Spidey fan back in the day but I haven't been reading for the last few years; but I'm looking to get back into it. I was wondering if there were any issues of key importance from the past few years I should look into. Any help would be appreciated.

Um, start with the raod to civil war, then civil war.
if you need the issues IM me, and I will give them to you.

Don't forget Sins past, the other, and the books containing the ezekiel totem story... Warning though, reading these stories MIGHT change your feelings towards spidey... either for the better or for the worst... But unfortunately they ARE important...

Here's some advice- doesn’t read any of ASM after #508, that’s when it went down the sh1tter (Mid-2004 onwards). It is also still crap.

Buy Sensational SM that’s the best read right now, it is worth seeking out all the back issues of that book also. It started off as Marvel Knights Spidey (first 12 issues were great). Current arc ‘Feral’ is about Spidey’s animal based foes- Puma, Vermin, etc going nuts, and it turns out Stegron plays a big part behind this.

The other book is Friendly Neighbourhood Spidey.
It is quite fun, but it divides most fans here as it failed to live up to initial expectations and instead is carving out a strange left field existence (the current arc is about a time travelling Hobgoblin from 2211 and parallel universes).
I dig it tho.

what were the main criticisms of MKSM after 12 then? i loved that arc, and so don't understand why people split the book (after and before #12) as to its success.

MKSM 12 ended really anticlimatically with the hotly anticipated Ock vs Osborn battle, being interrupted by a bolt of lightning, among other things people disliked the whole Scorpenom thing, Eddie Brock offing himself, and of course Peter convincing JJJ that Spider-Man was actually his son, and than taking JJJ's $500,000.

After Millars run the book switched into an entirely different direction art wise, with an almost Magna style taking over the book, replacing the Dodson's highly praised work. The stories were different as well, moving away from what Knights was intended to be and than dwelling into that strange Absorbing Man turned into crack storyline to show people otherwise.

I didn't read MKSM after issue 12 until the Other, and do I really have to explain what was wrong with the comic at that point? :)

^um, u kinda gave more reasons for it being worse BEFORE #12... not after. anyway i loved the whole wild blue yonder arc with absorbing man. spider-man took out a hard-hitter. made me smile :)

MKSM sucked in it's entire run. Sensational's good from what I've seen, but haven't been able to enjoy it 'cause I misplaced an issue and without it I had NO CLUE what went on.

i think sensational's overhyped. kinda like on these boards if someone "influential" (round here at least) says something's crap it catches on, it seems that there was a board saying how great it was and now EVERYONE says it. compared to other comics it really is nothing special.
It's supposed to be good with using spidey's rogue gallery and paying attention to continuity, yet it shows another time spider-man puts on the costume for the first time and he uses the new costume in ways that weren't even hinted at before, like growing metal spikes out of the back of his arms, so i didn't think that was a relevant comment for the series. overall the newest arc just made me think "meh".
plus they used some computer-generated art/colour in one of the issues and i don't read comics for that. if i wanted that kind of style i'd watch finding nemo.lol. Plus it was in just one of the issues, making it inconsistant.
overall, the latest FNSM have been much better, and i'd recommend that book to anyone. the current arc is actually my favourite arc in ANY comic from the last couple of months. i can't wait fr the next issue

Most art - I think all, actually - is digitally colored now. All you saw in that one issue was a different artist's different style. But yeah, it did suck they had just a drastic change like that right in the middle of the arc.

You reckon huh?, man that's insightful after being here a month.
How it actually is, is that fans here love arguing against each other if they believe in something that differs to another posters views on a subject, speaking for myself of course.

Well you could say that all the Spidey books right now are under par either greatly, or just going in a useless direction, but SSM is in my opinion a notably more worthwhile read then the other two.

Get over it, computers are used to aid and manipulate pages in all comics these days including the last couple of issues of ASM and FNSM.
For eg- when needing to show a TV screen of some repeated action that appeared in the previous panel, a repeat image shrunk and fit for the TV screen could not be bettered w/out the aid of the computer.

I like FNSM too, hope we get to see Spidey2099 soon, or the Stacy twins.

Here's a list of ALL the good Spidey stories I can recall at the moment in the past 5 years or so:

1) Spider-man/Human Torch: I'm With Stupid

Finally got the trade of this, and it was well worth the 6 bucks I paid for it. best Spidey story in years!!

2) I (heart) Marvel: Web of Romance

This is how the Spider-Man marriage should be written. Damn fine issue. The artwork is kind of sloppy here and there, but I'll let it slide.

3) Spectacular Spider-man #28

Paul Jenkins's final issue, and one hell of a personal introspective look at Peter Parker.

4) Spider-Man: Blue

I can't stress enough how great this mini-series was. It was truly awesome.

5) Spider-Man: New Avengers

This is the only jewel left in JMS's crown, IMHO. This is Spidey being heroic, and being a total bad-ass....something he doesn't do enough nowadays.

6) Marvel Knights Spider-Man 1-12

I'm a huge Millar fan, and I enjoyed this arc immensely. Aside from the lackluster GG/Doc Ock showdown, and the ******ed John Jameson is Spider-Man fiasco, it was awesome. Even with those faux paus, it was still better than any of the other overhyped Spider-Events we've had to endure over the last few years.

7) Civil War

No, I don't like Spidey being unmasked, but, in the context of this storyline, it works well....and judging from the cover to issue 5, we're going to get one hell of a showdown....maybe Spidey will actually hit someone and NOT say "like" or "um" every third word....(looking at YOU, Bendis)

That's all I can think of, as I'm running low on sleep right now. I'll think of more later, and I'm sure that others will add their own to the list.

Avoid the following:

-The Other
-Sins Past
-Book of Ezekiel
-Mr. Parker goes to Washington
-Anything by Reginald Hudlin

These are the unholy quintuplets of the apocalypse that have drained Spider-Man of his life's blood.
