That's a common design that's been around since the 70's. I remember reading some old Scientific American magazines that had stuff like this in it. Halo also uses the same design.

Definitely taking a big influence from Ringworld. Then again many other sci fi works have done that so there's no harm there.

I think this will be the first time to see it so fully realized in a live action blockbuster though. Glad Blomkamp will be the one to do it.

I found out that Wernher von Braun came up with this design in 1947 so Ringworld is probably based on his design too.

Wait are you guys referring to Von Braun's essay from Beyond the Space frontier? Because his design was far more in the vein of the space station from 2001 (in fact, 2001's design is pretty much exactly like VB's) than a ring world.

He created the design, the whole idea of a wheel like space station, from there others expanded on his idea.
