Something tells me this movie is going to end with a colony drop.

As for themes, District 9 was a bit more on the nose, since it was literally set in South Africa, which made the apartheid and forced relocation references obvious to anyone who is even only mildly familiar with the country's history.

I don't know if I agree...however....I do have to say this: Neill is nearly repeating the same themes here. Doesn't help that the visuals have nearly the same DNA as District 9 either.

Is that good or bad? We shall find out.

Its less race based than class based here though.

As for District 9 not being subtle enough.

The guy set out to make a film commenting on the country in which he grew up. Distorting the premise through a scifi lens greatly expanded the potential audience.

I don't care if it's too on the nose, what matters is the movie being good, it having a social commentary makes it even more interesting and compelling, plus he's not making movies for some kind of elite, it has to be palatable for general audiences..... It needs to make money, managing to do a big blockbuster with great action + make it smart, is one well of a feat.

I like that Blomkamp tells simple yet effective stories. Too many films nowadays are too convoluted. It's the design work and world building that takes his films to the next level. Granted I haven't seen Elysium but based on the script it was great in my opinion.

What is it like to go from a $34 million budget for “District 9” to a $115 million budget for “Elysium”?

Weirdly, it actually didn’t feel that different for me. The process felt incredibly similar. You can make films in Hollywood where they have like a $200 million budget and everything is cushioned like crazy. You have this 20% buffer in every department and it feels like you’re just burning money and everybody’s very relaxed and you kind of take your time and just work slowly on things. Or there’s the approach like “Elysium” which is, even though it cost $100 million, it should look like a $200 million film. It should be punching significantly above its weight. The same way “District 9″ looked more than it cost $30 million

He mentions the only other type of film he would consider would be a war film, I remember he helped Peter Jackson direct a ''World war 1'' short film.

I thought wikkus as the main character brought a lot of humor and charm even. Come on the whole "i did not engage in any pornographic acts with a prawn" was hilarious haha.

Yeah, totally. But what I do not envision is ever making a film that doesn’t have any kind of fantasy element to it. I’m just not interested in straight-ahead drama, or a straight-ahead action film. The only genre of movie that I could see making that doesn’t have anything magical or otherworldly about it would be a war film. I’m very interested in history and a war film could be something that would lure me in. But other than that, if there aren’t other worlds to go to, or other weird things to experience, I’m just not really interested in making it. Sci-fi is just one of many places. You could have fantasy. You could go forwards or backwards in time. I’m really interested in different forms of horror. But it has to have that element. To me, that’s what cinema is. Cinema isn’t a bunch of people talking at a dinner party — I’m just not interested in that.

This just looks so great! I too prefer the shorter trailer with that Florence-esque song (it doesn't sound like Florence's voice to me, though) over it.

And I love that Blomkamp has no plans to leave this genre any time soon. I feel like he still has so much more to offer it.

How come Blomkamp is the only guy that knows how to truly use CGI? Jesus, this looks beautiful. Add the storytelling, great casting and interesting themes, and the man is the perfect filmmaker.

i think Kosinski knows how to use cgi. plus he is also a fan of practical effects. CGI on favraue movies also looked good. IM,IM2 and Cowboys Aliens. all of them use combined real sets,practical effects and CGI.
