Animation Netflix Adapting Multiple Roald Dahl Stories as Animated Series

Could be interesting... I'm glad it mentions The Twits as being a possible one.. I've always wanted to see that along with a stop motion Enormous Crocodile.

Cool. I’ll definitely be giving them a try. I read most of the books.

Haha yes. The Twits was one of my favourites.

Yaaas finally someone is doing the twits. Why do a million Willy wonkas and no twits? Shameful I reckon

Taika Waititi to Tackle 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' for Netflix

Taika Waititi has found the golden ticket.

Just mere weeks after winning an Oscar for penning Jojo Rabbit, Waititi is jumping into the world of Roald Dahl for Netflix, closing a deal to write, direct and executive produce two original animated series based on the celebrated author’s works, the streaming company announced Thursday.

The first series will be based on the world and characters of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, while the second is described as a wholly original take on the Oompa-Loompas, the small song-loving humans who worked in Willy Wonka’s infamous factory.

According to Netflix, the shows will retain the quintessential spirit and tone of the original story “while building out the world and characters far beyond the pages of the Dahl book for the very first time.”

Said Netflix vp of original animation Melissa Cobb: “I grew up reading Dahl stories and lived large parts of my young life in those magical worlds, so finding just the right creative partner to bring Willy Wonka, Charlie and the Oompa-Loompas to life in animation was a daunting task...until Taika walked into the room. Then, it was really obvious. If Dahl had created a character of a filmmaker to adapt his work, I'm pretty sure he would have created Taika,”

“In the words of Willy Wonka himself – we are ‘Delighted! Charmed! Overjoyed!’ with Taika’s appointment on this project,” said Gideon Simeloff, commercial and entertainment director, Roald Dahl Story Company. “There is something undeniably Wonka-esque about Taika’s creative flair and inimitable sense of humor and we cannot think of anyone more perfectly suited to leading the creative charge on these first of their kind, feature quality Netflix shows.”

Very excited for this, love Taika!

I know it’s Netflix, but I really wasn’t expecting this level of talent. Makes me curious to see what they might have in store for the other Dahl properties.

Wonder if the show will use A-list actors, voice actors, or a mix of both for the cast.

Love Taika. But don’t like this spinoff angle. Just adapt The Great Glass Elevator.

Willy wonka again? Why not the twits?

I can see why they’re doing it though. I can see them going for a more woke angle to the Oompa Loompas

Since we’ve had movie versions of them all - and most pretty great as is - I hope they adapt the ones that haven’t been touched yet.

I don’t know if I want to see someone try and write Dahl with spin-offs. It’ll just be weird.

Great Glass Elevator needs an adaptation. I mean, it's basically everything you could want in a blockbuster there for the taking. Instead we're getting a prequel? Gah!

And yes please to The Twits, it's the last of his classics that hasn't been touched yet. Last I heard was a John Cleese version like a decade ago.

And I do love the TV version of Danny the Champion of the World, but I could use a bigger budget version of that too.

It’s official!

Netflix Acquires Roald Dahl Story Company – Deadline

Netflix has acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company for an undisclosed figure, giving it access to the full catalogue of works from the famed British author.

The deal extends a relationship between the two companies that began in 2018 with an initial pact that gave the streamer access to 16 titles for animation adaptations. To date, projects put into motion include Taika Waititi and Phil Johnston’s upcoming series based on the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and an adaptation of Matilda The Musical with Sony and Working Title.

Netflix said today it was eyeing the creation of a universe of projects based on Dahl properties across animated and live action films and TV, publishing, games, immersive experiences, live theatre, and consumer products.

I feel Dahl himself would mock that quote lol

Don’t see why they need to make video games, though!
