Netflix Adapting Lemony Snicket’s ‘A Series Of Unfortunate Events’ As Series
by Nellie Andreeva

After bursting onto the original series scene with premium cable-caliber adult fare such as House of Cards and Orange Is The New Black, Netflix is entering a new area: live-action family entertainment. On the heels of picking up AwesomenessTV’s live-action comedy Richie Rich, the streaming company has acquired rights to the best-selling series of books A Series Of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, with plans to adapt them as a live-action series. Search is underway for a director to help re-create Snicket’s visual world on TV. Netflix is producing the project, which is being fast-tracked, with Paramount Television. Paramount was behind the 2004 movie starring Jim Carrey, which grossed $209 million worldwide.

“On the search for fantastic material that appeals to both parents and kids, the first stop for generations of readers is A Series oOf Unfortunate Events,” said Cindy Holland, VP Original Content at Netflix. “The world created by Lemony Snicket is unique, darkly funny and relatable. We can’t wait to bring it to life for Netflix members.”

Narrated by Snicket, A Series Of Unfortunate Events recounts the tale of the orphaned children Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire at the hands of the villainous Count Olaf, as they face trials and tribulations, misfortunes and an evil uncle in search of their fortune, all in their quest to uncover the secret of their parents’ deaths. The 13 books in the series have sold more than 65 million copies and have been translated into 43 languages.

“I can’t believe it,” Snicket said, from an undisclosed location. “After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books.” Netflix went on to say, “Mr. Snicket’s participation will be limited, given his emotional distress, but the project has the full involvement of his legal, literary and social representative Daniel Handler, who is often mistaken for him.”

Lemony Snicket, of course is the pen name used by novelist Handler in several children’s books. Snicket’s new book is Shouldn’t You Be In School?, the third volume of the autobiographical “All The Wrong Questions.” Handler’s next novel for adults is We Are Pirates. He will host the National Book Awards this month in New York.

Netflix’s family-oriented originals include a slew of animated series, mostly from DreamWorks Animation — including Turbo Fast and the upcoming The Adventures of Puss In Boots — as well as Ever After High.

Handler is repped by ICM Partners and Charlotte Sheedy. ICM Partners brokered the deal for rights.
Oh dear God, YES! I hope they treat this as well as they have their other projects.

YAAAS! Loved these books when I was younger. And I liked the movie too. I'm surprised they're doing this though. I didn't think this was a popular enough property. Hope they get a good cast, cause even though the movie was lacking, it had a great cast.

The beginning of my Emily Browning crush. I was a big fan of the original film, and it got me to read the books which I also enjoy. I am all for this.

And they're adapting Richie Rich? Netflix is really on a roll

I need Count Olaf casting and I need it now.

I've been wondering what was going on with getting this series back in theaters or on TV and it's great to finally have news. Hopefully with it on Netflix they can take their time and do it right.

Never read the series, but I did like the movie well enough and was a little disappointed when the sequel didn't happen. Will keep an eye out for this. Man, Netflix is building a more impressive catalog of original shows than just about any network, cable or premium.

I liked the look of the movie and some parts of it that I actually remember from seeing it on TV a few years back, but I wasn't happy with, by virtue of the movie not being a serious adult drama, Carrey being given free reign to bring his shtick to the table. This time, I hope Olaf is legitimately terrifying.

Curious about who they'll get to write and direct.

I can't tell you how happy I am. I've been wanting a mini-series from this for the past two years. I just never knew what kind of network could make it. Netflix is absolutely ideal. This is one of the things I'm most excited for now. It's gonna be a long wait.

Now cast Stanley Tucci as Count Olaf.

I actually did like the movie and I thought Carrey did a good job as Olaf um I'll still watch this but are they pretty much adapting all 13 Books into 13 Episodes for the Season? If they are there really would be no point on making a season 2. Who knows.

Um where did it say that each episode would be a straight adaption of each of the book? They'll probably do a season per book, maybe skip one or two or condense mine or two.

I'd like it if they adapted 2 or 3 books per season.

It's been a while since I read them, but is think they could probably skip the one in the hospital.

I'd like it if they adapted 2 or 3 books per season.

Yeah, there's no way they're doing one per season. They'll do it so the show can be probably 4-5 seasons max, not 13.

Is that official? I wasn't sure at first because it wasn't from the Netflix channel, but it looks like that's the only video that particular channel has put out. Maybe they set up one just for the show.

We don't have a cast or creator/director or anything do we? Seems a bit early for a legit teaser like that. But whether or not it's official, it was great.

Wow that was a nice teaser still don't know if it was real or fake because I still haven't heard news about casting either.

Well if it is a fake it's a damn good fake.:up:

There's a lot of Easter Eggs for those of you who've read the books in that Teaser to if it is a Fake they did a good job.

Yeah, it is probably fake, but it is most definitely brilliant.

Looks like it might be real

A lot of sites are reporting that Netflix Released it. Who really knows the Series I think doesn't come out till 2016 so them releasing a teaser isn't all surprising.
