Umbrella Academy Netflix Orders 'Umbrella Academy' Adaptation

Granted I'm only two episodes in, but I'm finding it quite a drag [at the moment]. I'm sure it'll pick up, but it hasn't quite grabbed me yet.

I finished the first season and really liked it a lot.

Most of my issues stem from the character choices in that some of them are just come off as pretty damn stupid. But, I guess that’s the point since their Reginald was a crappy father.

Like for me, Five and Ben seem to be the only sensible ones. And I guess Klaus after sobering up.

I haven’t read the comics, but I did skim Wikipedia for the character descriptions. So, I’m interested in seeing how they reveal more about Reginald.

I have seen the first four and it does pick up. This latest episode had quite a bit of progress.

I'm about halfway through, and it is a slow burn. But I dig it. Definitely more character-focused than it is action-focused.

This is basically where I'm at with it right now.

While the production values are handsome enough, something hasn't really clicked into place for me yet with the storytelling and characters. They appear to have very minor roles in the story but so far I enjoy and am intrigued more by Pogo and "Mom" than any of the Umbrella Academy kids/adults.

Sheehan's got the physical side of his performance down as Klaus but I think he's hampered by the non-accent they have him doing. Hopper as Number One is literally just a big white stiff at the moment. The bad-ass time-traveler kid is too much of a bad-ass. The celebrity girl's power is way too powerful and her character doesn't make much of an impression. It's just odd to have a group where you have characters who can travel through space-time or speak things into existence and then other characters who are just strong or good with knives (though it is kind of a funny reminder of the original Avengers team).

Ellen Page is really the only one who brings a weight and focus when she is on the screen, and so far they've given her next to nothing to do. I think it would have helped a lot if the series focused more on her from the get-go and kind of made her the "main" character.

But, yeah, I'm only on the second episode.

Keep on watching. Ellen has a lot to do towards the middle/end of the season!!

I absolutely loved this and I dare say it's my pick for best superhero series of the year thus far. I was just that impressed by it. It felt completely different than other genre shows out there right now despite it being a very cliched premise. I will say that the first episode did not grab me like a pilot should, but by episode two, I was hooked. I binged through the whole series very quickly and found it to be a very satisfying ten hours.

I'm not a huge Ellen Page fan, but I have to give her credit for her role here, she really did a fantastic job with Vanya and the last few episodes were just chilling. I cannot wait for next season and I just hope we get one!

I loved this! I've not read the comic so, I don't have anything to compare it to other than other shows/movies. It held its own. The comedy was well executed. It really helped break up what could have been a VERY dark story. Klaus, Five, and Hazel are probably my favorites. Their interactions with everyone else just felt organic to me. I also loved how each had their own tragic side, too! Klaus being an addict to quiet the ghosts. Five having been alone for so long. Luther with no purpose. Allison and her daughter. Diego and Mom. Vanya and her isolation. It all just worked for me.

Also, the soundtrack was perfect!

Finally got a chance to finish (could only do 1-2 a day), absolutely love it!
Great cast and characters, yeah big picture these are (knowingly) easy and familiar tropes, ultimately the broken dysfunctional family must come together to work as a team.
Yet they pull it off wonderfully. Everyone has their own hang-ups, demons and fears to overcome, and either reinvent or come to terms with themselves, and their role in the group.
Love the pace, the music, the slow burn, the constant miscommunication (just tell them what you saw!), the bad decisions, constantly frustrating distractions LOL!, and especially (Vanya's) methodical story build up, and reveal.
And though you see it coming a mile away, I still cheered when Klaus ...
....and Ben ...finally unleashed.
Love the ending, both satisfying on it's own, and sets up for more.
Count one more fan eagerly anticipating another season.

Anyone have a screen-cap of the UA action figures Leonard/(Howard(as kid) was playing with, or in the display case?
I seriously hope someone picked up the license and can produce them. I know there are some wonderful figures based on Gabriel Bá's beautiful style.
I would love to see some show specific one's too,.

I too would love some merch from the comic and the tv series. I’ve been looking high and low for the set of figures at a decent price.
I’d love to have that lunch box, too.

Although I'd want them as their adult versions.

Pretty much this set, which is wonderful figures based on Gabriel Bá's beautiful style. And another revisited more as their TV cast incarnations,: ...and they need to add back #6 Ben!

Honestly I don't know what to make of this, cause here comes the stupid! Warning spoilers (I guess Cause the fact they did it actually Spoils the Story!) "Umbrella Academy" And Ellen Page Accused Of Racism For Cutting Out Asian Cast Member In Photo
I'm sorry but I'm as liberal as you can get, yet see the politically-correct and out of control virtue signaling just to show everyone how virtuous you are no mater the actual situation, is beyond out of control.
And this is a show that unapologetically went (beyond the comic) with a more diverse cast, on all fronts. And never made it about that. These were characters first!
And even then his (not even that well kept) reveal, is what makes you cheer in the end. He's one of the absolute coolest in the family!

Yet now? Really we are accusing this show and cast of being non inclusive and racist? WTF? Maybe watch the whole thing first! You would get if anything they were trying to minimize his presence across all the promo and media, interviews etc.... for a good reason. STORY!
It's like these PC piranhas are biting off their own heads.

Any perceived slight is a slight in actuality for some people. I really doubt it was racist nor intentional to omit him from the photos. But someone did something that someone else didn't like so it's automatically a vindictive move on whoever they are mad at.

...Also, if Matt Reeves is looking to include Robin in his series of Batman films, he should definitely consider Aiden Gallagher (The Boy). That kid is rad.
This "kid"(15?) is so good, definitely has got that old soul, he'd totally steal the movie from whoever they drag out as the next Batman.

He could play the pulp classic Golden Age Robin, who comfortably takes on the mobsters who murdered his family, piking them off one by one, tossing them off a skyscraper construction site, flipping them over his shoulder, somersaulting, swinging, sling-shotting, and knocking them off one-by-one single-handed. Sending them tumbling to their death bellow.
Until only one is left alive.
Finally Batman shows up, steps in to "save" the last mobster, to actually force a confession, probably before Robin can kill him too! LOL!

In the next - this time Joker's first appearance, Joker is getting away from Batman, and again it's Robin who tackles him solo. The kid fearlessly roll-kicks Joker off the top of the building to his potential death!
Again it's only Batman who intervenes to catch and save Joker, from splitting his head open on the sidewalk. LOL!

This is the "kid" Batman had to real-in because how smart and dangerous he was, and because he sees himself in him, what Batman could have become if he'd let himself go dark-vengeance LOL!

OMG let Aiden Gallagher play that classic Robin!

Yeah, a lot of the decision making has to do with how their father raised them. It really comes into the isolation of Vanya, and how he taught her siblings, to treat her in the same way. They are all ****ed up, and the only two that aren't completely messed up, are the ones that got away from him semi-early. And I love that. It makes what should be considered stupid decision making, make a lot of sense. The worst decision maker, is the one who was their father's "favorite".

Right. As I was watching I’d just go “Ugh” so many times because I’m like, “For all they were taught, sense didn’t seem to be one of them.” Hahaha.

And as you said, the most sensible ones are the ones who got away from early enough (Five and Ben). I legit laughed at how Luther reacted to Vanya since it seemed so close to what Reginald would’ve probably done.

What’s also amusing is that if you read the comics character descriptions on Wikipedia...

You learn that Reginald didn’t give them their designated numbers based on how useful they were, but on the magnitude of their powers.

Another thing I liked was how everyone was pretty dismissive of Klaus and his addiction or didn’t care much about it beyond “That's just Klaus being Klaus” while Ben seemed to be the only one who would encourage him to find the strength to fight it.

I think this sums up the ending of the season:

Luther should NOT be the one in charge of strategy. :funny:

Of course. He stayed with Reginald the longest. He held on the longest to his father's mission. Questioned it the least, to.

Klaus had the best interactions with his family.

Yes, that set. It goes for a crazy amount on EBay (between 500-800)

Do these open for people? I have no idea how to embed this stuff.?

I watched all 10 episodes in 2 days.

I really liked pretty much everything as well as the casting.
The only thing that was a minor annoyance was after the first episode I was 90% sure what caused the apocalypse and with each episode I was more sure (and it turns out I was right).
Even guessing the cause, the journey was still pretty great.

I think there is a "days of future past" easter egg in the 1st episode. When number 5 was phasing through space while talking about time travelling, the camera panned on Ellen Page.
