Umbrella Academy Netflix Orders 'Umbrella Academy' Adaptation

Not that anything screenrant puts out is worth reading but.....

EXCLUSIVE: Umbrella Academy Is Still The Most Popular Superhero TV Show

I enjoy this show more and more each time because the characters are complicated and so fallible - and the ice cream truck "ride of the valkyries" is just awesome.

Yeah I liked how they came off as an even more damaged version of the X-Men lol. Watching this has actually got me even more hyped for Doom Patrol once it comes on to Netflix.

I enjoyed the Doom patrol's appearance in Titans, but the characters in TUA have really grown on me and I can't wait to see more of them next season. The Doom Patrol are similar in some ways, but are more surreal, whereas TUA feel like real people, and they react in ways you imagine a person really would to bizarre situations.

Yeah im glad there is a recognizable and tonal difference between the two so they don't feel to similar.

I just loved Five's old man mannerisms in the young body, I gave credit to that actor because he did have my buying in to that he was an old man in kid's body.

I just binged that Show in 2 days. Wow I really loved that Show and cant wait for the next Season.
Ellen Page & MJB in GOAT-mode.

I just watched the show and LOVED IT. I need Season 2 now. Like, now. Ellen Page and Robert Sheehan are both fantastic - and I really liked David Castaneda as well, not to mention Mary J. Blige.

Really loved it. No5 was brilliant, Klause was my favourite and oddly I really enjoyed Hazel.
While I started off liking Luther he ended up on my nerves. And so far I've never enjoyed any role I've seen Ellen Page in, so scenes with Vanya (as truly bad as she's been treated) was my least enjoyable parts. Well, until episode 10 hahaha..

Very intrigued to know how Ben died. From what I've read, Luther might have had something to do with it... Maybe forced to fight the monster and accidentally killing him?

Would have been interesting if he'd died as a kid, Hargreeves choosing to put him down because of his powers and then
choosing to rather sedate Vanya... But it looks like he died AFTER Vanya was sedated...

Looking forward to Season 2!

Yeah. I've watched Season 1 at least 3 times in its entirety. Season 2 can't come soon enough - I prefer the Netflix series to the comic because they really capture the characters as people, relatable, damaged, fallible people. Looking forward to more awkward dance sequences too

For me ( and I'm not a fan of musicals or dancing) the dancing in the moonlight sequence was the most joyful moment in the series, and I was gutted that it didn't actually happen.

Ellen Page was good, but slow to develop whereas
Robert Sheehan was amazing from his first appearance and, stole every scene he was in. Klaus had a deep and emotional arc but at the same time being really funny. I have worked with some drug addicts and he captures some of their pain and frailty while still remaining a reasonably sympathetic character. Probably the show's breakout performance.

I don't get why Luther was superstrong yet he never conveyed it adequately. Was Mary J. Blige and her colleague immortals? Because they took Luther on and kept on ticking. She even survived that car crash.

I’m going to be starting my rewatch today, and can’t wait. This show is a really good superhero show, much better (IMO) than Arrow or Agents of SHIELD, etc.

What I think is interesting about TUA it is that it's central premise is that superheroes are a kid wish -fulfillment thing, because the academy is only really a team of super heroes when they are kids. What the series does is show us what happens when those kids grow up into dysfunctional adults with real life problems ( trying to find a purpose in life, sibling rivalry, divorce, parenting, drug addiction, low self esteem, death, daddy/mommy issues etc.) but it presents those problems in an in interesting way and blending in the fantasy superhero elements cleverly.

Both Luther and Diego are trying to hold on to the superhero child fantasy - Luther by staying with Dad until only he's left and Diego with his budget-Batman vigilante routine.

Vanya gives voice to her resentment at being excluded not by plotting her siblings' demise but by writing a book.

Interestingly Number 5, who is physically the youngest is also the most grown up and mature - but even he's got issues, although he's able to let go of them ( e.g. when he puts Delores back in the store). Love the bit where he tells Luther that there are no good guys or bad guys, just people living out their lives.

To me it's a bit of a deconstruction of the superhero genre which is what makes it more than just another Xmen/Doom Patrol rip off. The X-Men and even other superhero tv show characters are a lot less complex than the characters in TUA, even Hazel and Cha Cha are more complex than standard comic book bad guys ( and more interesting than their comic book counter parts).

To me the show has transcended the TUA comic book significantly by exploring a bit of depth in the characters....and the dance sequences!

They're time agents...like that lady who was supposed to be dead after 5 blew the place up, even though she could just reverse time & whatnot. Those two are probably strong because they developed some durability.

Yeah, they take the time so you're invested and there's a
significant difference at the end, in the comics Vanya is shot in the head, but sure. In the show Alison shoots next to Santa's ear to break her concentration. I think they put this in to really drive home that as a family they love each other - Luther clearly loved Vanya but still put her in the soundproof room.

I am slightly bewildered by Luther's strength vs Hazel's - although Diego really struggles with Hazel as well, the guy's a brute.

Hope there's a season 2.

I just went back a few pages in this thread to see what speculation there was on the Hazel vs. Luther strength and everyone seems mystified by Hazel being a match for Luther and falling back on his training vs. Luther being strong, but slow.

I finally got around to re-watching this show and have finished the first 3 episodes and something occurred to me since everything is fresh in my mind.
Right off the bat they said there were 43 children born and Hargreeves only got 7. That leaves 36 unaccounted for.
My thinking is both Hazel and Cha Cha are 2 of the other 36 and recruited by the Commission, just like they recruited #5.
Training might allow Hazel to fight better than Luther, but unless Hazel is "special" as soon as Luther lands a solid blow it would be all over and Hazel was able to boh dish it out and take it in a straight up fight.
Likewise Cha Cha was able to match both Diego and Allison straight up.

This only occurred to me just now, on my first viewing I was like everyone else wondering why Hazel wasn't pulped by Luther after Luther got his hands on him.

What's interesting is how much that the Luther v Hazel strength issue leaps out at us as an audience - given that if we buy into the show we're okay with immaculate conception, time travel, talking to the dead, mind control, a time travelling adjustment bureau based in 1955 who have unisex toilets ( I mean in 1955 ?) and a violinist being able to blow up the moon.

To be honest I can live with Luther not using his strength very effectively ( he's got some fighting skills but he's not a very skilled fighter like Diego and quite slow, and also not a killer ) and Hazel being extremely tough - both he and Cha Cha take a pounding but keep on going ( she probably loses to Diego in the finale because she's just been in a car accident). Nobody seems bulletproof though.

The Commission had technology that could travel through and even stop time, as well as heal the Handler after she was caught in a grenade blast and build 5 a new body. It's not hard to believe they could modify Hazel and Cha cha to be extra tough. Again, they also have unisex toilets so clearly they're extremely advanced.

To be honest I don't see the strength issue as a major problem. Luther can effortlessly toss bowling balls with a lot of force ( his best feats are throwing - he throws Hazel quite a distance, if he had thrown him at a nearby wall maybe that would have been more effective). We see Hazel get stabbed in the leg by Diego, which hurts him but he immediately walks it off.

What I think is a more important question is who has the best dance feats - something TUA have the X-Men beat at hands down.

Diego really busts the moves during the family dance sequence, Hazel and Cha cha get funky during the arson sequence and Luther and Allison would probably win dancing with the stars with their number. Who's the best ? I love Ellen Page but you have to wonder if she dances that awkwardly in real life or the director had to make sure she was extra stiff in that scene. Can't wait for more dancing in season 2 !

Among everything else, also loved that dance montage, and pull back Wes Anderson style set reveal at the end.

Don't know what I'm looking at there^, but can't wait for more of this show and dysfunctional cast.

Presumably the title of the first episode, I guess. Suggesting that we’re going back to their childhood.

Love TUA, despite all their issues the characters are relatable (because their hang ups are real life hang ups).

IMO the show is better than the comics because it's so much better fleshed out. I never found the Seance particularly engaging in the comics but in the show Klaus is a complicated, hilarious and likeable ( despite his faults) character who goes through a lot and reacts in ways that make sense.

I bet the title means they're travelling back to 1 October 1989.

So Season 2 has started filming and I am so hyped. Aidan and Ellen both posted about it on their Instagrams.

Steve Blackman? That explains so much...

Nice. So concerned was I that it might not come back.

I hope it has more dancing
