New Amsterdam

Holy crap.

Just finished watching tonight's ep on DVR. This show has already endeared itself to me, as far as I'm concerned. The unforeseen depth of the relationship between Omar and John (Johann's his real name!) is crazy, and just something that will happen when you can't age, but everyone else, including your children, around you do.

If he was a real person, I'd be willing to bet that at least half of the native New Yorkers are either related, or tied to him in some fashion or another. It's like his children act as his keepers.

For those who are comparing this show to any of the Highlander platforms (movies, TV), Highlander doesn't even come close to the depth that they are treating John's character.

I really, really like this show.

show looks cheesy, where can i catch old episodes or whatever?

Hmm, I should've watched this last night instead of Lost, I have no idea what's going on on Lost. Oh well.

I watched this one on DVR, and DL'ed Lost. It's easier to follow Lost anyhow, without having commercial interruptions, even if you can fast-forward through them on a DVR recording.

Great episode last night. Man, just two episodes in and it already is my one of my favorite shows on FOX. John having different jobs through his past is so cool and let alone, the scenes of his past are handled so well. I can't wait for the third episode.

ah, so my suspicious about John were right. It turns out he does work other jobs and under different aliases. But Omar being his son I didnt see coming.

I didn't see that coming either. :hehe:

I really hope more people are watching this show.

I've really enjoyed this show myself.

Hope the ratings are good enough to keep Fox from canceling the show. Looking forward to tomorrow's episode.

I enjoyed it... not as much as some of you guys seem to have, but it's interesting. I too felt off put by the partner, but oh well.

Well I have watched all three eps so far and I still feel the same as I did after viewing the pilot--alot of potential but there are still problems.

Great concept, like the main actor and his son
But the side characters are still not growing on me (partner and jerk cop)

As well as the editing and overall storytelling just seems off to me.
For example (I will wrap in spoiler tags just so I won't give away details for anyone yet to watch)

When John goes to see the doctor in that quick scene to get his tests and then it immediately cuts to him interviewing someone regarding the murder. Then at the end he was with the doctor again getting tested. Just seems that some things were moved out of place in this ep. Just not liking there overall story telling--and I really want to because as I said it's an interesting concept and I like how he plays Amsterdam.

Also, John is a smart guy. He is a detective and has obviously been following this woman (Sara the doc) and learning everything there is to know about her as was displayed when he was talking to Omar....Yet he didn't know she was married???? Can't think of how they could explain that away...just seems like sloppy writing to me. Like they said oh this will really make a great scene at the end no matter that it actually doesn't make sense as the story has just been explained.

There appears to be a huge inherent flaw in this show. The hook is supposed to be that he's immortal but there's no payoff. The only thing they milk out of this is the fact that they do flashbacks of his past life.

I totally agree with you, something felt off in last night's episode, and I couldn't quite place it. Still watching, but looking forward to the show hitting it's stride a little better.

Oh and the husband thing, I was thinking the SAME THING! I mean he knows where she lives, so I'm assuming he looked her up, and yet there was NO information in there about her being married??? Wouldn't that be the FIRST thing you checked out? That part did kind of bother me.

Like others here, I do like this show...but it's got a lot of flaws that it needs to work out, fast, if they want to keep it on the air.

I love Amsterdam and Omar, and kinda like the partner, but the other characters (jerk cop, doctor love interest who I honestly don't think is his soul-mate cause it seems way too easy and she's unlikable) aren't likeable and are really dull.

The flashback stuff's pretty good, but the cop storylines are really weak and predictable...the most recent episode's cop plot was especially dumb.

I like the show, but I honestly don't know how much longer I want to watch it.

I didn't like the pilot, but the last few episodes have been pretty good. Oddly, I love everything except for the main romantic plot. That doctor chick annoys me. I think she's a big red herring and his partner is his soul mate or something.

I've watched the first three episodes, but still haven't gotten really into the show. I've got the latest episode on my DVR and will probably watch it this weekend, but it's just not very interesting. The cases of the week are pretty predictable, the stuff with Omar is okay and the flashback stuff is decent, but I'd really like to know why the Indians did this to him. Was he a total womanizer before and this is to teach him a lesson? With other shows about immortal people you understand the premise. Highlander, you must become the "one", vampire shows, they're looking for redemption of the horrible acts as vampires. This guy doesn't seem to have any motivation, other than to find his one true love and die. Although kinda flies in the face of the whole notion of "the one" considering he's had to wait 400 years to find her. I think they just need to amp the show up in some way, it needs something extra to make it really good, it's not bad, but at the same time, not especially good either.

Does anyone know how it's doing in the ratings? I'd think they haphazard scheduling of the first three episodes would have hurt the show. Airing it on two different nights before finally showing it on the regular night and time.

So the season finale was tonight. I really enjoyed it.

Does anybody know if this is getting picked up for a second season?

No word from what I know of. Hope it gets picked up.

8 eppys for the first season was too short imo. Why not at least 13?

Felt very underwhelming, really don't care whether this show comes back or not. I think it's the procedural case stuff that gets me, just boring.

Well, most cop shows get procedural. The awesome part about this show is that they try and inject the viewpoint of someone who has lived for 400 years in as realistic, and non-campy a manner as possible. Also, it's not just about the cop aspect of it, as you get to see his many lives as different people, and how those past lives affect his present life and viewpoints.

I thought the show they did about the crime family that actually owes its existence to him was very unique. The family patriarch even shot him with a Dutch catchphrase/key that allowed him into the funeral. The biggest thing was the guilt they portrayed John as having, for possibly being the cause of his family branch's turn to crime.

Like I said, this show is deep.

Yeah I like this show, and I did really like that mob family episode, but this for a season finale felt kind of bleh to me. I was hoping for a little bit more I guess.

I think that attributes more to the fact that that likely wasn't what they planned to be the season-ender. Especially considering the quality of the writing with a subject matter that could have easily gone the wrong direction, but hasn't.
