An upcoming biography on the life of Bruce Lee by his brother Lee Chun-fai is providing the source material for a new movie on the late martial arts star.
In a recent statement, the Beijing Jian Yongjia film company announced plans to produce the film with the cooperation of Lee's family.
"Bruce Lee died young, but stories about him haven't stopped surfacing for 30 years. A lot of them were rumors fed by rumors and exaggerated. Bruce Lee's family didn't make its opinions known because they understood people's passion about Bruce Lee," the statement said.
"As the members of the Lee family enter old age, to let people know the true story about Bruce Lee, Lee Chun-fai assumed responsibility and carefully organized materials kept by the family, writing the biography 'Bruce Lee,' a real and little-known true story," it said.
Sina.com reports that Stephen Chow, a long-time admirer of Lee is a likely lead actor for the film, which is budgeted at $12.5 million. Production may begin early next year.
The book is scheduled for release on Nov. 25th, Bruce Lee's birthday. In addition to the movie, Beijing Jian Yongjia plans to produce a series of films, television shows and documentaries.
Since his death at the age of 32 due to swelling of the brain, Bruce Lee has become an iconic figure revered worldwide. In 2005, both Hong Kong and the Bosnian city of Mostar erected life-size statues of the star. He is remembered for his intense and magnetic personality both on and off screen, his promotion of Chinese martial arts and as a symbol of strength and determination against oppression as dramatized in three of his films.
Bruce Lee only starred in four completed martial arts movies before his death, which left an indelible void in Hong Kong's emerging kung fu movie scene in the early 1970s. Since then, dozens of documentaries and movies have been released, either on the life of Bruce Lee or exploiting his image.
The most notable movie to date is Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, Rob Cohen's 1993 adaptation of Lee's life based in part on the book Bruce Lee: The Man Only I Knew by Lee's surviving wife Linda Lee Cadwell. This Hollywood version of Lee's life was also based on a biography of Lee by Enter the Dragon director Robert Clouse.
Beijing Jian Yongjia's upcoming movie will be the first attempt by Chinese filmmakers to examine the life of Bruce Lee with the full participation of Lee's family.
