New Exorcist?

An interview with DGG that he very much enjoyed it and thinks reviews will be positive. Brandon Davis as well.

We'll see. Everything I'm seeing in interviews and the tv spots, just makes me think this will be another generic requel that tries to recapture elements of the original film by having modernized scenes of what we've seen before.

Reviews are mid which was to be expected considering how generic the trailers were.

Yup, as expected.
From the trailers alone i could tell this was gonna be just another exorcism movie of the bunch, and they wanna make two more? Yikes.

I'm not shocked. When David Gordon Green was announced as the co-screenwriter and director, my gut feeling told me this was going to be disappointing. You can tell he has passion for something like this, sure, but he isn't the ideal filmmaker for this type of property. A part of me was hoping this was going to be surprisingly great, however, the trailers pretty much told me everything I needed to know about this film - a generic, lazy fan film with a big budget. I'll stick to The Exorcist and The Exorcist III.

Honestly, I just believe the Exorcist series is cursed. The original is so iconic and aside from the third movie all the others suck. Doesn't help that all other Exorcist wannabes made ever since have been god-awful mostly. I'm not blaming David Gordon Green on this one. He handled the recent Halloween trilogy incredibly well, especially in light of how bad 5, 6, Resurrection and the two Rob Zombie movies are (anyone who says otherwise needs to go back and look at those; we got it good in comparison). But with Exorcist it feels like he was just a hired gun on it after the Halloween movies made money. It doesn't feel like something he wanted to do unlike with the other revival.

The show is damn good though.

Let me be clear...I'm not saying David Gordon Green is a bad director. When he has a strong script, like in his film Stronger, he proves to be a skilled storyteller. His passion for horror classics like Halloween and The Exorcist is evident, and those films are truly awesome. However, the issue lies in the scripts he chooses to work with. The 2018 Halloween film had some good ideas and moments, but it needed a solid polish before shooting. It ended up being an average slasher with some good moments, but it has big flaws. While Green clearly adores John Carpenter's classic, the script fell short of its potential and certain plot points needed reworking. Unfortunately, his subsequent Halloween films were lackluster and uninspired. It seems Green believes that doubling up on everything is the key to a great sequel. But simply amplifying the violence, characters, shocks, and twists doesn't guarantee success. It worked in a film such as Aliens, but only because in that film it had a fantastic script. Green's Halloween films and his new Exorcist film lack truly great scripts. They are decent, but they could have been so much more. To me, Denis Villeneuve's approach with Blade Runner 2049 is the gold standard for making a fantastic sequel to a classic film.

Considering how awful both Halloween Kills and Ends were, not shocked by the current 30% RT and bad buzz. Skipping this theatrically. I will maybe watch this on streaming. One day. Not in any rush. One day when I am not busy, kids are in bed, and I don't feel like going down a YT rabbit hole. Then maybe....I will consider it before watching something else

I love that all but one of the attempts at follow-ups have been so rotted that it makes this movie’s 24% more middling than strictly bad.

Maybe I should consider myself lucky that I've only ever seen the original.

Would definitely give the 3rd a watch. Its got a cult following and is generally a well made horror that even a fan like me finds difficult to sit through.
OT. Not surprised by the feedback unfortunately, as some have said. The trailers were generic and offered NO atmosphere at all. It's the Exorcist ffs. Literally the holy grail of Horror. Im generally abit miffed by how this movie has been approached and handled. I will watch(Only because of Cineworld card lol) and try to keep myself neutral but i can't help but feel disappointed with the general reaction to this film. Someone mentioned there's another 2 films in tow aswell.....Righhhttttt lool Good luck pulling that off . These cookie cutter films get exposed quickly these days. The general audience and in particular hardcore horror fans wont stand for it.

Can't help but think those two follow-up films will soon be Rian'd.

Oh wow. I didn't expect amazing reviews, but I didn't think they'd get *that* bad.

The Exorcist does have a bad track record with it's sequels/prequels, though I actually liked Exorcist: The Beginning. I acknowledge that the 3rd act is completely off the rails and stupid. It was at least creepy until then.

Further proof that DGG seems to be a one hit wonder when it comes to the horror genre. Since this was announced to be the first in a trilogy, I had my suspicions, but when the first trailer was released, this reeked of generic jump scares and lacked the atmospheric feel that made the original such a great film. If this doesn’t perform as well, I wonder if the studio will keep him around for the sequels.

DGG has some good ideas at time (that often lack proper execution) but I definitely don't think he was the right one for a legacy sequel of the Exorcist. That much is certain.

I'm curious how
Regan fits into the story since I heard she also had a cameo.

Saw it tonight... it's weird. I don't think it deserves the "worst movie ever" moniker, but I don't think it was all that good.

The first half was more interesting than the 2nd half.
