Researchers develop sticky gecko-like material

Researchers at BAE Systems' Advanced Technology Centre in Bristol seem to have take a cue from Q's play book, developing a new synthetic material that could be used to create special wall-climbing suits for soldiers and spies. The material is designed to mimic a gecko's foot, which is covered with hairs so small that they form a bond with just about anything they touch, but can still be easily peeled off. In addition to human super-hero antics, the researchers say the material could also be used for wall-climbing robots. But the Brits aren't the only geeks that have turned to geckos for inspiration. As you may remember, some peeps at Stanford recently managed to not only replicate a gecko's sticky feet, but create a full-fledged geckobot.

Cool stuff. I remember reading about this in in a science magazine about a year ago. Very interesting. But could it be used in the movies? I doubt it. First there's the cost for the microscopic velcro-like material -- which I doubt is very easy to make. Then one would probably have to train in order to use it properly and still move like Spider-Man. It is much easier to use CGI.

There's also that expanding super-sticky polymer that was invented a while back... ;)

ya, anything that would help control "clime"-ing "causts" of CG is good.

I mean high quality "ILM grade" GC can cost upwards of several thousand dollars a second, where as a fully functional wall climbing spy suit can't cost more than a bottle of rubber cement and a paint roller to apply it with, right?

And screw the actors, those guys at Team America got it right, puppets are WAY cheaper.

I can't wait for puppet spiderman in his spy suit. See if we can get Michael Bay to direct.

capt Thorobberson, stop talking out of your ***. Not only could this help if they make another Spiderman movie later on (like they did with Batman Begins), I could see them using it.

Besides, who cares if they do? From what I read, it sounds awesome as ****, I would love to somehow get my hands on it!!

I doubt that this stuff will be safe to use for the type of wall crawling Spidey does in these movies.

This sounds as if it's more for stealth and infiltration purposed.

yea but u could be hooked onto a cable wile running up wals to ensure more safety.

id love to get this costume thing, id crawl up walls all day, well i do climb buildings and skool all the time but wall crawling is awsome.

id eventualy make a spidey suit using this ****!!

Before you go and drop several million dollars on a state of the art infiltration suit you should maybe spend a couple of bucks on a dictionary.

I'm also gonna call BS on you climbing your "skool". Your posts make it very clear you've never even seen a picture of a school, let alone been near one.

dude i dont care that i cnt spell, well i can but i just choose to not care and choose to not correct my spelling.. soo your insults honestly dont phase me, so **** off

and yes i do CLIMB! schools im on a team with my friends, its a bunch of jackass stunts and freestyle running aka parkour (par-core)

so yea Gigo, um go play in traffic, or jump off a cliff, wich ever one works for you

Glad to see you weren't phased by his insults! :D

I'd hate to see your response if they really bothered you.

^ i know but what ever, this gigo guys an ass, i mean who cares if people spell wrong, it pisses most people off when nerds like that correct everything.

its annoying, i realy dont care that i cant spell all that great

oh noes, "multi-star me".

I haven't corrected you yet, just mocked you for being so lead-paint-chewingly stupid as to mis-spell words like "cost".

Seriously, a parkour "team"? Like you compete on the semi-pro parkour circuit? Do you guys have cool nicknames like "Antigravity Ninja" and "StickyShoes"? Can I get a team poster?

I remember reading something about this in 2002. It said a couple years from now they would get them made but...Yeah it didn't happen.:down

No, it couldn't help in the movies.

The real problem isn't the cost of the material, because what's a few hundred thousand on a $75,000,000 movie?

The real problem is that few, if any, people have the strength to climb like Spiderman. They'd still have to revert to the standard wire apparatus.

LOL... Well, this is a disaster waiting to happen. Millions of comic fans will kill themselves if they get their hands on this stuff.

I can see the headlines now:

"LOCAL IDIOT IN SPIDER-MAN COSTUME
PLUMMETS 57 STORIES TO HIS DEATH!"

lol. That would suck. People could mug someone and then crawl away!
