Comics Newbie's Guide lol

Hi there well I use to read the comics but ufff its been a long.. long time. I started collection the Phoenix Saga last year but stopped at theh second issue. Me question is what is the Diff between the Book and the comic saga. Also I loved the animated series that Fox made back in the mid 90's is there an Xmen comics that continue the animated series???
