9/11 'not as bad' as IRA blasts (2007 Nobel prize winner)

Madrid - Nobel prize winning author Doris Lessing said in an interview published on Sunday that the September 11 attacks had not been "so bad" when compared to Irish Republican Army action.
"September 11 was terrible, but if one re-examines the history of the IRA, what happened in the United States wasn't so bad," Lessing - who captured this year's Nobel literature prize - told Spain's leading El Pais daily.
The IRA waged a lengthy armed struggle against British rule in Northern Ireland. It declared an end to its armed campaign in 2005.
"Some Americans believe I'm crazy. Many people died, two prominent buildings fell, but it was neither as terrible nor so extraordinary as they think," Lessing said of the 2001 attacks in New York and Washington in which about 3 000 people were killed.
In similarly pointed remarks in the Spanish translation, she described former British prime minister Tony Blair as a "little showman" who proved disastrous for Britain and US President George W Bush as a "world calamity".
"Everyone is weary of this man. Either he is stupid or he is very clever," Lessing said of Bush adding that the US leader came from "a social class which has profited from wars".
She told El Pais she had recently finished a book on war.
The 87-year-old British author, who has written about feminism, politics and her childhood in Africa, won the Nobel Prize on October 11. Along with her epic novels, she is also known for her political views that have embraced Marxist, anti-colonialism, anti-apartheid and feminist causes over the years.

Noel Prize as in... Christmas Prize from... Santa??
Yeah... kids these days are spoiled and ungrateful!

I don't see what's wrong with what she said.

The irony of Slim calling someone who's a noted literary figure who has been published in the areas of feminism and political insight and won a Nobel prize for it an "idiot" is just amusing as all hell. :)

And the thread title's spelling error doesn't help his casue.

Ranking tragedies is ******ed.
If one person dies, it's the end of the universe.
This crap about, "Hey, we only lost THREE guys on the first day of the war.
That ROCKS! In WW2, they lost 12,000 guys on day one!" is crap.
Tell that the families of the 3 guys.

How about we just say, it's unimaginable and horrible when an innocent gets killed?
It was too as terrible and extraordinary as some of us think.
What a c***.

If you want to be as callous as she's trying to sound, well, she's really wrong.

All flights to and from Ireland are shut down - Big wh00p
All flights to and from America are shut down - Massive ramifications

The economy of Ireland is crippled, boo hoo.
The Economy of the U.S, is crippled, that's huge.

So, sorry, it really was as extraordinary and terrible as people say.

No one says, "Well, in a Post-Belfast Bombing World, we need to..."
:whatever:

I think what she's really getting at, Wil, is that it's ALL horrible. Every last bit of it. You're probably more in agreement with her than not, if I'm right.

I won the Noel Prize one year at the 3rd grade Christmas Pageant. It was awesome.

Well I've heard that expressed a lot better than "It wasn't that horrible."

I've heard variations on "3,000 people killed, and that's terrible, and devastating to the American public, but they should be aware that people all over the world have been living with fear like that for generations, like in Israel, etc."

she did start with "September 11 was terrible, but if one re-examines the history of the IRA, what happened in the United States wasn't so bad,"

we'd have to see a little bit of Irish history in order to fully understand the whole scope of her words

LAWL! I just love how all these Neo-Cons are so up in arms about Gore winning the Nobel Prize.

*wipes tears* This thread certainly did not disappoint.
