Film Now Introducing HBO Max Classic

General Film
Discovery Plus is probably my most watched streaming service, and HBO Max the least.

HBO carries a much better name than Discovery. If anything they should be rolling Discovery+ into HBO Max rather than the other way around.
I thought this was what was happening. I can't imagine HBO Max tanking.

Doesn't HBO Max have like 75 million subscribers? I don't see it going away but this movie cancelling spree is not good news for the service.

Rumor has it HBO Max is going under and will be merged into Discovery+ app.

They wont do anymore HBO Max originals and will likely cancel majority of hte Max originals.

Discovery wants to focus more on reality shows.
Before today I'd have called BS on that rumor, but now? It would be insane, but so is canning a finished movie as a tax write-off because it isn't "big" enough. Who are the octogenarian empty suits running the show at Discovery? They just bought the best streamer in the business at a time their main competition is faltering, and instead of competing want to scuttle the whole thing because they would rather have more ******* reality tv? I'm so deeply worried for every project and IP under their control right now.

This is exactly why these types of buy-outs and mergers never should have been allowed in the first place.

That's the point. They just bough an extremely expensive asset. They want to get back to profitability as soon as possible.

Really? It came and went within a month and I don't think it had any excitement from kids or otherwise. One of those early Covid dumps.

But I don't know the numbers. Obviously not strong enough for them to just dump it now.
Do you have children, have a lot of younger relatives, or are a education professional to younger kids?
Because it's hard to say it came and went when you're not the target audience.

In any case, it's streaming so getting concrete numbers is difficult but it seems it did pretty well Scoob! - Wikipedia

In Europe it was already confirmed in April that Discovery Plus and HBO Max were merging locally. No further details since or any info on how exactly they're rebranding. They've killed the majority of local content in preparation. Pissed a lot of people off since we only just got HBO Max.

It played decently with kids, but was pretty widely considered to be a terrible iteration of Scooby-Doo. I was surprised they were even considering a sequel.

I just don't get why use the Discover name for Warner Discovery's streaming service. When people think Discovery they don't think movies or scripted content.

There was debate for a while that they shouldn't have used the HBO name. While calling it Warners Bros + or Time Warner + wouldn't have been bad, it made sense to use the HBO name because it's so popular when it comes to quality content with the GA. Moreso than the actual WB name

But "Discovery?" Obviously a popular name but I feel it's the worst option of the 3. No one thinks or prestige TV, watching movies, etc. when they hear Discovery. They think of nature stuff and reality shows.

If anything they should merge and change the name to "Warners Bros Max" or "Warners Bros+" not fold everything and use the Discovery name

Which is the really alarming part - Zaslav seems to be signalling his team has zero interest in scripted streaming content. They just want to snag the HBO and WB libraries and shove them into a corner on their own app as just another pile of content. All they care about is having more money to keep making their reality shows with while trying to chase billion dollar headlines as movie producers.

I'm figuring HBO Max really needs GOT HOD to do well.

Did Discovery make Sopranos, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Game Of Thrones, Watchmen, Sex And The City, The Leftovers, Succession, Barry, Westworld, and so forth?

No, HBO did. This would be idiotic to squander HBO into Discovery.

What is Discovery's greatest asset? Climbing docs and Shark Week - lol.

And this is almost certainly being done to avoid honoring residual contracts with the artists. They're disappearing underperforming titles to shirk their responsibilities and try to pass them off for sale. And if there's no buyers? The films are lost to the void.

It's like Zaslav saw people coming at Netflix for how they screw over artists and said

Absolutely. But I don't even know if that would make a difference. They seem content to stick all scripted tv back to just HBO. And I'm extremely worried for the fate of the Sea Snake and Nymeria shows. Bold but unproven concepts centered around POC characters? Seems exactly the sort of thing these suits would toss on the bonfire first.

So Discovery is basically cutting lots of stuff and not investing in anything new? I still want HBO Max for the catalogue of movies they have, but this is really puzzling choice.

Not a fan of any of those films (not that I dislike them I've never seen them) But that's jacked up to remove them.

Streaming era, man
