Obesity Epidemic and Fat Acceptance

I think that's the next karaoke song I'll sing, if any. Weird Al songs are fun to sing, even if you suck at singing.

When I buy a sandwich, am I actually paying for the sandwich maker's daughter's dollhouse?
Actually, yes. I would look at it that way. Especially within the context of taxes.

EDIT: Look, I see what you're getting at Carch, and I know that in a round about way, I am paying for that, but all in all, that doesn't make much of an impact on me. I'm still not able to use that money for myself or the people I know, regardless of what it's being used for by the people I send it to. If I wanted to reference your sig (which I really like by the way, as I tend to look to how things are in nature for guidance on how I feel things should be), my payment is just a consequence of me being part of a socially communal species.

I just prefer to keep my direct interest in those who are within 2 social degrees of myself (people I know and people who know people I know). Anything outside that is outside my direct influence and I see no point wasting time worrying about it when I have my own concerns.
I understand, and that attitude is consistent with others you've expressed. I'm just saying that when it's predicted that rising obesity rates will cost U.S. Health Care about $344 billion, it can affect everybody. That's another consequence of being part of a socially communal species.

No, you're just paying for their quadruple bypasses.

Who is paying for someone's quadruple bypasses? In what system is it that the burden of one person's problems is carried by society as a whole?

I made an edit because I didn't think you'd respond before I have to leave for school.

Anyways, on to anesthesia class! :awesome:

I think what needs to be done is promote a culture of wellness, be it exercise, eating better

Im a kind of big guy....6'3 about 230, but I run.walk a lot during my week, just started roller skating, try to eat decent most days

not sitting at home cramming mcnuggets into my face and trying to fool myself by drinking a diet coke

Your tax money doesn't go to health care in the United States? Am I missing something?

my diet changed a while back, that and I started eating less

My tax money goes to a lot of things, and I look at it as my contribution to the nation. If my taxes go to health care I am benefiting myself because I am putting in a small portion of something that I can be a part of. I pay a little bit and get health care. I'm not paying all of my taxes so one person could be lazy and bum off of me. They pay their contribution to receive the benefits as I did. My taxes aren't some superhero that are responsible for everyone. It's just what I pay to become a part of the club that gets certain benefits.

To be honest I'm more pissed about all the money being spent on creating a mega sized military that doesn't benefit the average person. Universal health care is a lot more benefit to most people than spending more on defense than all other nations combined. At least we actually would see some personal benefits.

Now that's assuming that there is universal health care. I didn't think that quite passed. I thought that the new bill just made sure that insurance companies can't deny people coverage, but universal health care is still not intact yet if I'm not mistaken.

Although, to be honest, McNuggets and a Diet Coke are probably a lot better than McNuggets and a high-octane soda. Liquid calories are dangerous.

For those of you who are overweight and would like to drop some lbs, assuming you're seeking extrinsic motivation, what would you need to get started/keep going? Do you need a boot camp style personal trainer yelling at you, a calm partner to diet and exercise with you, etc. I'm always curious to find out why people can never seem to get the ball rolling on weight loss.

I can't speak for others, but I respond well to having a workout partner, compliments from people who see me changing my life, and fun sometimes works.

People rarely ever try to make cardio fun anymore. It's all running, bicycles, and kickboxing. Dammit, where's my late night infomercial for a break dancing workout plan?! If the first disc alone had a bunch of toprock and downrock routines, I'd drop 20lbs in 2 weeks.

The point is that increased health care costs can affect everyone. If you find it to be of a negligible degree, then fine. I just don't take hundreds of billions of dollars lightly.

quit yer whining, fatty....get on the spin bike:o

the two current "hot" workout trends are Zumba and P-90X

Ive started roller skating as I volunteer with roller derby here in CT, youll drop some lbs running around on skates

Never implied that they aren't, but you can't honestly tell me that one scenario isn't better than the other.

only slightly better...kind of like how getting punched in the face is slightly better than getting kicked in the balls

Are you implying that Kickboxing isn't fun good sir?

How much of that could be actually attributed to people being fatter? I figured that inflation would have a larger role in all of this, and so would the effect of a struggling economic situation with some insurance companies.

More obese people may have an effect on that, but the bigger problem is probably something different.

It's only fun if I actually get to hit somebody. Kneeing the air repeatedly is pointless and hollow.

Try using a heavy bag...All the fun of hitting something without the risk of them hitting back.

There's a huge difference between 590 calories (large coke + 6-piece nuggets) and 280 calories (6-piece nuggets).

Even a small coke has 150 calories. That's more than 50% of the calories you'd find in a 6-piece order of nuggets. That's more than slight.

It's not people being fatter... its a larger proportion of people are fat now. More people fat = more health issues= more cost.

And the argument of 'who cares what happens to my tax money' doesn't make sense. Wouldn't it be better if the money was going into something that couldn't be solved simply by a healthy lifestyle?

Basically though it comes down to the fact that the western diet is a mash-up of crap.
