Still, this looks outstanding and makes you wonder why they dont use this more often (or they do, and we just dont know about it). It looks particularly spectacular here because these are floating clouds, above a volcano.

Back projection backgrounds are hardly a new idea, even if this is making use of better cameras and such.

-the projected screen emits light on the set.
-accurate lighting on set
-360 HD video that has enough resolution so that they dont need to blur it out
-projected screen big enough so that they have 100% freedom on set
-option to brigter or darken the screen which will work with deph of field and motion blur

this is big.

They shot this in Taxcutville, Lousiana, right? Was it just for sound stages?

Probably, they shot some places in Louisiana but the larger landscapes they shot it in Iceland.

Love the Sky Tower featurette, they have really used some interesting techniques to shoot this film and visually I think it's the most exciting and inventive of any this year.
