Legend of Zelda Offical The Legend of Zelda Thread

The only thing so called "stale or dated" in Skyward Sword is that there is no voice acting and honestly it's not that big of a deal. I've been playing this now for a little while and stale is one word that is farthest away from my mind right now. In fact that is one thing this Zelda finally changes. It doesn't copy Ocarina of time like all the other 3d games does. It changes everything up without changing what makes Zelda Zelda. Story so far is good, I like how they make you friends with Zelda right away as kids which helps emotionally with your quest to get her back. The suiting up scene was pretty epic. Obviously the best part of this game is the gameplay. The sword fighting is perfect. I don't think I really need to say anything else about it, plain and simple its perfect. Every move he does follows you exactly, enemies are constantly changing their stances and what not to block you. Of course I'm still early on so they're not tough to figure it out but its obvious that challenge is going to ramped up as the game goes on. The art style is phenomenal, absolutely beautiful to look at it althought it could be a bit smoother but its something that doesn't detract from my game experience. I really hope they go with this art style again for the first Zelda title on the Wii U because it has to potential to be stunning. So far this is the game of the year for me, maybe something down the line will ruin it for me but I don't think so. Nintendo knocked it out the park again with a 1st party title for the Wii.

I have yet to play a bad Zelda game (the CD-I games don't count). And I have played and beaten all the main titles. Even II.

Zelda is not without its issues though. The lack of voice acting is just the most obvious one. The boring repetition of collecting things just to get to the final boss for example... Medallions, triforce pieces, mirror shards... they could work on have a more organic story. Perhaps they've made changes in Skyward Sword.

I take it you disagree?

The Legend of Zelda does not need voice acting. At all. The last time Nintendo responded to fan pressure we got Twilight Princess, the most lackluster Zelda console title out there. And the last time they gave Link a voice, we got this:

Oh c'mon. That's hardly a fair example. What about the other video games that had corny cartoons (e.g. everyone who showed up in Captain N)? Many of them adopted voice acting without any issues.

Twilight Princess may not have been the best Zelda game, but it was still a good game. Is all fan input bad?

What was the fan pressure around Twilight Princess?

I don't know if I would call it pressure, but a lot of fans disliked Wind Waker's cel-shading. Twilight Princess's "realistic graphics" were allegedly influenced by fan reaction.

What was wrong with house Twilight Princess looked? I loved how it looked.

Problem I had with Twilight Princess is that it was boring. Graphics were amazing and the boss battle with Ganondorf was beyond epic but besides that it was a meh experience.

I agree the game was a bit dull, mostly because of the linear gameplay. Have yet to hear anyone really complain about the artistic style though.

The real issue for me in Twilight Princess was the characters or lack there of. Ganondorf in Wind Waker actually had some depth. In Twilight Princess he was just there for the sake of being there. Zelda spent almost the entire game off screen.

Even the people in the game seemed rather uninterested in the fact that their ruler had just disappeared.

It's not my favorite game, but it's still a good game.

There was nothing wrong with the way Twilight Princess looked. Thundercrack was just saying that even though Wind Waker was well-received, what most Zelda fans really wanted was a "darker", more "realistic" looking Zelda that was a follow-up to Ocarina of Time and so Nintendo made Twilight Princess to please them. And then people complained it was too much like Ocarina.

Well, it seems GameTrailers liked the game after all. They gave it a 9.1. I thought their score would be much lower considering all the negatives they had to say about the game in their Podcast. The review is fair:

What's wrong with the line "Well, excuuuuuuuse me, Princess!"? It's hilarious. I use it all the time.

This right here is everything that was wrong with Twilight Princess.

Some of those negatives such as the lack of voice acting and complaining about the Wii's graphical capabilities are total ********.

The rest is a good review though. GameTrailers overall is one of the better review sites, but seriously, people need to get past the no voice acting bit.

It's 2011. If you have dialogue, people are going to expect (or in this case, demand) voice acting.

Given that, I don't care if it's cel-shaded, realistic, or impressionist.

People are spoiled. The lack of voice acting is one of the charms in Zelda. Besides, it's not like voice acting benefited the Metroid franchise.

I think at the very least Zelda games should have voice acting in the cut scenes, although I don't think Link should ever talk.

They could always just have an on / off switch.

But spoiled? Come on. Off the top of your head, what's another game with as much text as Zelda, that does not have voice acting? Much less one with Zelda's budget.

Reading the dialogue though eh Id rather not hear someone say it out loud

The artistic style was bland and dull.

I don't know if I fully agree with that. All the twilight stuff was pretty cool looking. I also liked Link's weird dreams. TP was still an incredible game and probably one my top 5 Wii games.

The overall world and gameplay, though, while much bigger than any other Zelda game, was pretty basic and wasn't really treading any new waters (unlike Wind Waker)

Puns for the win!

I actually prefer that Zelda not have any voice acting. Leaves it up to your imagination.
