If they were getting TV writers to do the script, they should've just gotten the showrunners for the new Doctor Who. They do great with multiple-demographic appeal, complex mythologies, and epic scopes.

They didn't specifically decide "Let's get TV writers!" if I'm not mistaken, the TV writers came to them to pitch the movie.

I don't want larger worlds because they muddle the single character films so I'm thankful that Nolan doesn't care for it either.

And yes, I'm going to be first in line to see Avengers but I'm not expecting a good or conherent film. I hate what Marvel is doing. I just hope that Captain America is good enough for me to ignore the Avengers advertisements because Thor and Iron Man 2 sure weren't.

Thats one other thing that I loved about First Class, it wasn't another commercial for an upcoming film.

The beauty of the separate universe.

I'm still waiting for someone to point out all the Avengers advertisements and the number of minutes they took up in the Iron Man 2 film.

Apart from the end credit scene, there weren't any. Unless you want to claim the Banner and Stark reference.

Can Iron Man 2 points get pointed out in the Iron Man 2 section?

The Hawkeye scene in Thor is the only scene that felt like they interrupted the film for some Avengers pandering. And it was what, 3 minutes?

Regardless of the minutes they took up, the film came to a dead halt everytime Nick Fury showed up. I believe this contributes to much of the pacing issues in the second half of the flick.

Thor, though, was much better at incorporating the Avengers stuff and further highlights IM2's clunkyness in this area.

Marvel Studios was supposed to release Thor in the summer IM2 came out and IM2 this year before Cap. IM2 was supposed to act as a segwey film for The Avengers, unfortunately that didn't work because they needed another origin/buffer film to come out before. The screenplay had a last minute polish and rewrite to make up for this change and it obviously shows.

SPEAKING of segways moves... since DC planned for GL to test the waters for more epic scale heroing and -- knowing how studios shy away from what they perceive the GA does not like -- do you think IF they make a sequel it will focus more of Earth?

I'm pretty certain by this point that they won't make a sequel, which is a shame. But if they do, I expect them to realize that the main criticism of this movie comes from the fact that it was too much focused on Earth and too little on Space, and fix that.

Snyder's Superman is only stand-alone because Nolan is whiny when it comes with crossovers.

Do you honestly think it will be a better Superman movie if it references or features Batman? The Superman references didn't improve Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.

Getting back on topic...

That's one of the criticisms, not the main criticism. The main criticism is the script.

I would have been happy with an Earth-centered movie just as much as a space centric one. This one just couldn't make up it's mind on where it wanted to focus on and the jumps from one to the other made it seem like Oa and the Sun were next to Florida

The number one rule of a Hollywood sequel is: you go bigger. I realize this is simply a hypothetical but it is hard to fathom audiences would care about a sequel to this—with the same cast and look—no matter where it's set.

Now, if were talking sequel/reboot in the "Incredible Hulk" vein, they should definitely set it almost entirely in space to distinguish itself from its geocentric "prequel". A different cast and a whole new look would be ideal.

Why on Earth (pun intended) would they need to focus the sequel on space instead of terra firma...?

Look: Hal Jordan (and his successors) are the *human* Earthling Green Lanterns of this sector. Easily the majority of their comic book issues take place right here on Earth, and even the space issues almost always revolve around an alien threat to Earth.

"Too much Earth" isn't even remotely the problem with GL. The "problem" with GL is simply that mainstream audiences aren't interested. There is nothing innately WRONG with GL in terms of story, acting, directing or concept. It is what it is: Green Lantern. And, just like in the real world of comic fandom, Green Lantern is an acquired taste that not many people ever acquired.

How GL could have benefitted:
1) Make the movie more epic, by making it longer. The battle scenes were short as hell; the training sequence virtually nonexistent. Give Hal more time to interact with Kilowog, Tomar-Re and Sinestro....show more alien GLs....give Hal an introductory shakedown mission on some alien world that doesn't relate directly to the main Parallax plot.
2) John Stewart. Seriously. GL purists will howl, but honestly, those Hollywood liberal reviewers who cast about aimlessly looking for some legitimate reason to hate the movie would have been heaping nothing but praise on it if it featured a black movie star in the central role. And face it: there's a large portion of younger moviegoers who know GL *only* through the Justice League cartoons.
