Action-Adventure Old Guard | Charlize Theron & Kiki Layne

I just finished it and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Never read the comics, but now I'm looking them up on Amazon to get them. Loved the cast but agreed, Charlize and Kiki were the standouts. The Andy character I really did enjoy too, she reminded me of a nice fusion of Xena and the Bride from Kill Bill. But this was definitely the CBM fix I needed, I liked it better as a tight movie instead of a drawn out series filled with filler episodes.

You get the mythology, the motivation of the characters, some good drama and kick ass fights all in one solid hurrah. I can't wait for the sequel.

It reminded me of this tweet

There was another one that I can’t find now about how there should’ve been a post credit scene of Tyler being approached by Andy and Co because he turned out to be one of them. :funny:

That’s like 95% of all Netflix movies. In one week, out the next. Just too much to even care about at this point.

And the 5% are foreign films, many of whom are better than a lot of the English language films.

The slow character moments and glimpses into their pasts was the best parts for me. I wish they had adapted the comics into a series and provided more of those moments. Very much looking forward to the sequel.

I think Merrick as a villain was effective, because he is entirely believable. He is a young twerp with a power complex and too much money and not enough sense. We see his sort every day in the real world, and it's not at all hard for me to believe his actions.
It not the boss that bothers me about these types of shows, it's their mercenaries who keep fighting and moving forward while being hit harder than the Marines on Iwo Jima.

Just watched this. Enjoyed it far more than expected. Easily my favorite of the Netflix "Hollywood action" stable thus far. I'd definitely watch a sequel. Probably gonna check out the comics, too. It was nice that they let Rucka write the adaptation, imo. Wish they'd let more comics writers get in on these screen adaptations.

So are we thinking this has been successful enough for a sequel? As I would certainly watch one.

It would certainly be interesting what happens with
Andy and I hope we get an explanation as to why the immortality runs out

I would hope.

I also want to know

How in the world did Quynh escape from underwater. That’s a helluva stinger.

Yeah I want to know both, but with
Quynh it could be something a sequel simple as her metal prison rusting after hundreds/thousands of years. She is bound to be a bit crazy by now though
.

Finally watched it and it felt a lot like watching a TV pilot. They really should’ve gone with the series route with this. Overall, it wasn’t exceptional but I really liked Andromache, the action, the little bit of the immortals’ history that they explored
particulary Qyunh
as well as the gay couple. How refreshing to have an affectionate yet badass gay couple being romantic and openly showing their love for each other in the midst of a violent, bloody action movie without being stereotyped or becoming the butt of the joke. Shoutout to the creator for making the inclusion of their romance mandatory in his contract :wowe:. Marvel, Eternals better deliver after all that ruckus you’ve been making :o.

Eternals is a Marvel movie. Best not to expect them to to push the limits of their usual formula.

I read somewhere about how for streaming services the first season builds buzz and draws more subscriptions for season 2 and by season 3 no new subscriptions thus they cut their payroll and move to the next new thing to draw subscriptions. I can't imagine the decision would be much different for a series of movies. But the actors price might go up where that generally doesn't happen in the early years of a TV series.
I would hope.

Rust and corrosion over the centuries. Mother Nature always wins in the end.

They better get on it. It’s going to be hard to buy that they’re immortals if they look noticeably older in the sequel.

Like how Star Trek kept pancaking more pasty white makeup on Brent Spiner to try to hide that he was aging (and gaining weight).

I’m expecting very little. It’s just that Disney has a history of publicising the inclusion of gay characters that are in literal 2 second scenes. So after talking about it for all this time, they better be prepared for major backlash if that’s the case with Eternals.

Not that I think that’s what’s going to happen. I think they’re only talking about it so much because it’s a significant enough part. At least by Disney standards.

Like LeFou being gay in live action Beauty and the Beast that you could easily not even notice if you weren’t paying attention.

Or Marvel’s technically first gay character in Endgame. Or the lesbian kiss in the Rise of Skywalker. Both of which were cut in international markets.

I have no recollection of a lesbian kiss in ROS.

Apparently the one kid in the background in Spider-Man: Homecoming played by J.J. Totah (who's transgender in real life) was supposed to be gay, but was just there in the one group chat where they were talking about which superheroes they had crushes on. I guess it's obvious when he names Thor (IIRC) as his crush, but again, how many people even noticed?
