I have a vhs/dvd player and a hi definition tv. I just bought an adapter to make it work and the hdmi cord are all connected. The tv has a weak or no signal message but I shouldn’t need an hdmi stick to just play a movie. Any advice?

Only things I can think of are to go through the inputs on your remote and make sure you're on the right one, and also to make sure the adapter is plugged into the correct "HDMI IN" port. You are correct in that you shouldn't need to get an HDMI stick, but your TV is not seeing the connection for some reason, which is usually either from it looking in the wrong place or if you've got a bad port/cable.
