Is the component video port bad on my DVD Player or HDTV?

I recently bought a new HDTV & tried hooking up my standard Def dvd player/recorder via component cables to the tv & all I got was no signal could be found but when I hook the dvd player/recorder into the tv using composite RCA cables everything seems to work fine, so what could be the problem? Shouldn't I have still been able to get a 720i or p signal or a 480p signal through my standard Def dvd player using component cables if things had worked the way they were supposed to?

Your tv should have more than one set of component inputs. Try the 2nd component input on your TV and see if you have the same problem.

If the problem persists after that, its likely the DVD player settings... To fix it, connect your DVD player to the TV via composite... then go into the DVD menu and set the output to 480p or 720p... then unplug the composite video and reconnect via the component. It should work.

You might have to actually set the video output of the DVD player (in the settings menu) to component out

It is only a 22" inch tv with only 1 composite & 1 component input & the dvd player only has a 480i & then a 480p progressive scan resolution setting but I still can't get it to work through the component setting. Every other port on the tv seems to work fine except the component port.

I would also try and "rule out" the cables themselves. You might have a bad set of RCAs there.

To test this, take your red/white/yellow cables (Audio + yellow video) and use them as component cables. It doesnt make which colour you use for the red, green & blue of the component... just make sure you line all the colours up. So use red for red, white for blue and yellow for the green. At least we can do a process of elimination of sorts.

Did you go through the settings of the DVD player menu? Many times the component output has to be turned on and/or selected to be 480p or 720p.

Think I solved the problem, I had accidentally put the component cables into the spare rca cable input on the back of the dvd player instead of the component cable output. I'm usually not this stupid when it comes to electronics but sometimes even the smartest people make mistakes. Thanks for helping me though.

You mean you put the "red" video cable into the red audio output?
