my buddy bought one of those home theater in box, a samsung HT-Z320. it is a nice little set up, 1000 watts, 5 speakers with sub and a Ipod docking station that plugs in the back. we got it all set up but he only gets sound when he plays a DVD in the built in player. the receiver has the following on the back:

HDMI out
Component out
Composite in with RCA audio in.
Optical audio in

I ran a pair of RCA cables from the audio out on his TV into the RCA audio in on the samsung but got no sound. he has a HDTV box from the cable company when we ran the RCA audio cables from the out on the back of the box to the inputs on the samsung we got sound no problem. we called up samsung's 800 number and they told him that if he ran a optical cable from the tv (32" Vizio LCD) to the samsung that will fix the problem. I have my audio out from my tv going to my Pioneer and all the stuff that plugs into the tv automatically comes out through the receiver, so i am just curious why we get sound out of the HDTV box but not the tv directly, and will the adding a optical cable fix the problem or is samsung full of s***?

PS, the only reason why he wants to get the sound to come from the tv is he has his PS3 hooked up to the tv via the one of 2 HDMI inputs on his tv, he has one more free, but i don't think running the samsung to his tv via that HDMI will really help or will it?

Hmmm...well I have a Pioneer AVR set up with my PS3 and TV and everything works fine. Granted that when I watch tv stations sound only comes through the tv. But if I watch burays, hook up my computer to watch movies or play my PS3 the sound is all surround. So I am not sure what you guys did, plus I do have a HD dish box set up.

Anyone using HDMI cables in those set ups?

I have a similar Samsung system. The optical cable does in fact work. You hook one end to your Home Theatre system and the other end to the optical port on the back of the TV. On the Samsung remote you want to click on "AUX" or auxilliary and you will see some dialogue on the player that says (D-In-1" or "AUX 1" , something similar to this. After a few seconds the sound will sync and you will hear it out of both your TV and your Home Theatre system. If you get an 'echo' effect its because you have both on, simply mute your TV and enjoy the Home Theatre speakers.

actually you are right, but the problem was the chip in the tv that controls the AUDIO OUT on both the RCA AND the optical jack was the cause of the problem. we took the main unit and a set of the front speakers to my house and ran it to my tv instead of running it to my pioneer AV unit and we got sound, another way to tell that his jacks were bad was my optical out port has a red glow behind the little flap that pushes in when you plug in a optical cable, on HIS set it was not glowing at all. he took the tv and put it in his bedroom, took the home theater back and got his $$$ back and put the refund towards a NEW tv for the living room. in the future he plans on getting a TRUE home theater and not one that has a built in dvd player and has limited input/outputs ;).
