On statues , and where you “draw the line...”

The UDC statues were put up solely to create a false narrative regarding the "Lost Cause" and should be first in the chopping block. But many of those monuments are standing in places where the idealization of the Confederacy has public appeal. Protesters aren't going to be defacing or tearing down those statues.

I could see this being a goal for the next administration. A monument task force with funds set aside for removing and replacing old monuments with ones that are less racist and icky.

Folks may want to keep celebrating their "heritage". But what if you can replace that old statue with one of a locally born sports star, celebrity, or less racist historical figure? An attraction that could potentially draw tourists to East Bumf***? And at no cost to your backwater burg? That may be the best way to topple those things.

I'm leery of protesters just deciding they have the right to tear down any statues they deem fit, and I certainly think the protesters in London attacking the statues of Winston Churchill and Queen Victoria is going overboard, and people's contributions to history shouldn't just be boiled down to the fact that, yes they were racist by modern standards, as if that's all there is to their legacy.

Literally couldn't have worded it any better if I tried to myself.

It reminds me of the Hitler probably did some good stuff.....

Do you think his statue should be removed?

Who?

Hitler?

Never heard of the guy.

Then again I take all my historical knowledge from statues and don't read books.

Or anything online.

Ooh... Also I have never seen any type of film or TV show set before I was born.

Ditto ever speaking to any person older than I am for all of my life.

I wish I had a better picture of this Hitler guy to make some judgement on. Maybe if we'd put up statues everywhere? Really get some good momentum going on that Hitler awareness.

To me, all of the discussion on this thread argues for a reasoned, larger discussion on how we handle, not just statues and monuments, but also how we discuss our history. It should NOT, under any circumstances, be swept under the rug because it's uncomfortable or whaever. No one is perfect and it's okay to have a public discussion of the shortcomings of our "heroes". Unless you're talking about the current president. We shouldn't be mean to him and lie about him.....

Unless your name is Clark Kent, you don’t need a statute.
