Hi guys, bit of a n00b to the comic world really. Been a fan of the characters for years in the various media formats and figured its about time I started reading up on a few of them.

2 questions. Which storylines would be the best to focus on? ie which would be the best reads? And is there anywhere online where I can read classic DC tales such as Action Comics #1. Been searching but cant seem to find any.

Posting a similar thread on the Marvel forum so if you have similar info for Marvel can you let me know as well?

Hey riddler, welcome to the hype!

there a series of books called the DC Archives and DC Showcase which reprint lots of the DC stories from the Golden and Silver age. Marvel respectively has the Marvel Masterworks and the Essentials line of books that also reprint decades old stories (the Essential and Showcase volumes are in black and white and very affordable, while the Masterworks and DC Archives are a little more expensive because it costs alot of money to recolor the older stories)

as for where you should start reading, that's up to you. There's DOZENS of amazing books out there that are worth your time, it's just about what appeals to you.

We have an Official Recommendations Thread here which will tell you about a bunch of great comics of all different sorts, you should be able to find some things you're interested in here:
Ver 2.0

no need to have two threads, the same people read both sections

as to reading comics online - well technicly it's illegal, but occassionally single issue previews can be found online to entice you to buy the rest of it, but you won't be able to read whole story arcs for free

What specific characters were you looking to read about?

Riddler, i'd advise you to read some independents or some adult books (just cos i think noobs should be encouraged to support the less corporation-like area of industry). There's a cool new comic barely started called the Talent by Boom!Studios. It's been commissioned for a movie or something, but i swear its only on issue #2. go figure ;)

For free comics: You should go to the America's Best Comics website. There you can read some Alan Moore - a complete genius! lol. It includes the first issue of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - crap movie, cool comic. recommended  Oh and read Tom Strong :)
ABC is part of DC now, but apart from its split companies you can't read many mainstream DC books on their website. However on Marvel.com they put lots of comics up and i think Last Hero Standing (set in the alternate MC2 universe but still VERY reader friendly) has the whole mini-series on there.

Cheers for the info guys, gonna get stuck in to the recommendations thread and come up with a few to start off with anyway. Did a quick search on it though and couldnt find any Riddler stories!!!! Youd never guess I was a fan. Got any ideas as to which of his tales were the best reads. I know he wasnt as big a character in the comics as he turned out to be elsewhere, but is there any top quality tales that include Mr Nygma??

Orko, as I said, the Riddler is definitely my favourite, but funnily enough, on the hero side, always preferred Superman to Batman. To be honest though, I think Im willing to try anything at all to begin with, until I find my niche. Been collecting the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection by Eaglemoss here in Ireland(have you heard of it?), and thats kind of what has finally pushed me to read some of these comics. Even though DC has always been what Ive leaned towards in cinema etc

MyPokerShirt, def gonna check out this Talent comic, never really gave much thought to looking off mainstream, and a m8 of mine has LofEG so I will probably nab a few of them off him and check them out.

Heres to the start of what I hope is a long journey

slight warning on talent (which if you can get good onya, my LCS is being an arse with me), its more of a mystery than a superhero book tho there are powers involved. i'd advise googling it first, but it seems like you've got the right idea in getting some advice. it can be really daunting going into a LCS and i always thought (as a kid) an independent adult section was full of porn , but independents are where people can really find their niche, if you ask me. anyway good luck! lol!

Riddler doesn't really have too many stories where he figures in. The most notable one of recent memory is Batman: Hush, which EVERYONE gushes over because it's got Jim Lee art but I personally think is overrated. But you'll probably dig it. Riddler figures big towards the end, and almost every other Bat-villain shows up, too.

Other than that, the best place to get a Riddler fix is to buy the Batman Animated DVDs. GOD that show was good....
