Orphan: First Kill (Formerly Esther) - prequel to Orphan

Saw that this was on Paramount+. So I figured what the hell. What a ridiculous movie. But I will say that the twist that happens about halfway through caught me off guard. I’m not sure that it was exactly a GOOD twist but it definitely made the movie more entertaining.

Honestly, this concept MIGHT have worked pretty well if this movie came out 10 years ago when Isabelle could have realistically still passed for a 10 year old. But as it is now, the scenes where everyone believes she’s a child are just painful. It reminds me of that weird Clifford movie that Martin Short did back in the 90s, lol.

It's by Will Bell who did The Boy and that twist is on the same level as this one.

Now that's what I like to hear. More Esther please.

Have it take place after the first movie, retcon her death and taking place in an asylum that's not the Saarne Institute. That way you can still have body doubles for Leena, but make it easier for Isabelle Furhman to play her without any makeup and thus doing away with the issue of suspension of desbelief.

NO. Enough is enough. Esther died at the end of the first movie and the new prequel is probably not gonna set the world on fire. Let everyone move on. This premise was good for one movie and that was in 2009.

Maybe the most entertaining bad movie in a while for me. Had me laughing for most of the film, from the crazy twists to the funny way they try to make her look young knowing damn well she looks 15 years older, to some of the ridiculous directing choices (like seriously this film is Butt ugly). Haven’t had this much fun on a movie that technically doesn’t work in a while. Biggest competition in that department this year was probably Moonfall.

I just stated my opinion. I did not present it as fact and you're free to disagree with me.

But for the love of god, chill. I'm starting to notice a temperament problem with some of your posts.

Going into this with 0 expectations... I kinda loved it. It's silly, campy, and is having a great time with it. There is no reason for this to be as hilarious as it is but I approve.
I don't know if I'd call this a good movie, but not since Malignant have I been so insanely entertained by a B-horror flick and that's more than I can say about most horror films nowadays sadly.

I still love the first movie more and just from a technical/filmmaking perspective that's definitely a vastly superior film to this IMO, but the second half of this movie is so ridiculous and over the top in its campiness.

I couldn't help but eat it up and what makes it even better is that it pretty much embraces all of the insanity with a straight face which in order to work definitely takes a skilled director.

It's easily the best thing William Brent Bell has ever done which is the most surprising of all, but I also thought that Isabelle Fuhrman and Julia Stiles were equally awesome in this despite the material they were given.
Man, y'all are making me want to watch this.

I really, REALLY need a How Did This Get Made of this movie.

I can already see Jason's face when that twist shows up.

I do wish they had tried to use de-aging effects here. Half the time it doesn't look that noticeable, but when there are close-ups of Isabelle Furhman's face, it really borders on the suspension of disbelief.

Thankfully her performance still worked that it didn't kill the movie for me.

If I had a nickel for every time a Sutherland was menaced by a dwarf woman whom he's mistaken for his lost daughter, I'd have two nickels. But still, it's weird that it's happened twice.

It was ok, I think they could have done a better job de-aging Esther. The twist was SOMEWHAT predictable, but was still well pulled off. Stiles and Fuhrman was great in their roles. Not sure if this is very consistent with the first film tho. Overall I still prefer the first film and think it has a better tone imo. But this was fine, I'm just not into the bizarre camp tone which is weird.

There were times where I was wondering if the camera lens fogged up and someone forgot to clean it.

I'm glad I saw this comment. I actually thought there was something wrong with my TV or the settings. That opening looks like it's 720p or even lower quality.

I seriously can’t believe this got mostly good reviews. It’s one of the dumbest movies I’ve ever seen.

Decided to finally watch this today for some odd reason....so bad. so very. very. bad.
