Our Generation's Greatest Song Writter...

of all time, its hands down dylan, lennon, and mccartney.

though, when it comes to writers relevant to the current generation, i'd obviously go with jack white.

Slipknot?
Yeah "people=****" is a real flash of inspiration.

More his Stone Sour stuff. Like Through Glass about how almost all modern music is carbon copied and emotionless.

LOL
LOL!
LOLZZZ!!!!

Seriously though, whilst they might be some of your fave song writers, to suggest them as a generation's greatest songwriter is flat out laughable.
In their generation of carbon copy crap? Layne was an amazing song writer, and the best one to come out of the early nineties. Brent is the best song writer of NOW. Just because they write or wrote in an era where most of the music was crap doesn't mean they should be over looked as the talents of THEIR generations. Best of all time? Hell no. But of their era? Definitely. Name a song writer better than Smith right now. That started in the late nineties or early 00s like Brent did.

Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Paul Simon, Andrew Bird, Will Sheff, Win Butler, Stephen Merritt, PJ Harvey, Neko Case, Ani Defranco, Joanna Newsom, Ben Folds, Beck, James Dean Bradfield, Nellie McKay...

1988 (for Beck) and 1994 (for Smith) are really late nineties/early 00s. I must have been born in the early nineties if my birth year was 1984 huh?

That doesn't negate their song writing talent, though.

Also, they've been going for longer and are still better than Brent Smith.

beck's "Mellow Gold" came out in 1993 or 1994 don't get all academic
his indie releases don't really count because... uh....well, no one knew him dude, I'm sure your shinedown guy had written songs prior to his first release.
c'mon now.

Honestly, out of all people, i would have thought you would come up with better than your list.

why is every one going with Rock?

Tupac, and even some one like Jay z, Nas, or even Kanye West (still early) could be up there on that list.

Its still Jackson for me though.

after a whole day of thinking i keep coming back to the same name.
and although most wouldn't agree, Ani DiFranco.
her lyrics are like poetry.
she can do love songs and songs that have an important political message.
even if you don't like her music, her lyrics are pretty timeless.

Yeah, she was in my list too. Having said that, whilst I'm not her biggest fan, she's a million times better than that Brent dude that Green Lantern suggested.

yes, i can understand that.
a lot of people can't dig her music but her lyrics are amazing... i think.

just a little heads up, the main songwritter in Alice In Chains has always been Jerry Cantrell, thought you might want to know that little piece of information
