Parents Force Daughter to Drink Lethal Amounts of Soda

Legally speaking, I don't see how they can be charged with murder.

It doesn't really fit into any degree of murder on the US law books. It was child neglect resulting in the accidental death of a child. They probably will be charged with negligent homicide.

The prosecutor knows the law in Tennessee. He charged them with murder and got an indictment so he must have legal support for that.

This act of irresponsibility will make the parents look back at what they did and cry a lot, at least that is part of what it should do, I guess this is where "their mistake resulted in punishment enough for them" stem from

So legally speaking, this doesn't count stuffing her to what is likely beyond her breaking point?

With everything that is known about colas/sodas nowadays, I think any parent that brings that type of poison into their homes and allows access to it by their underage children should be charged.
Actually, in this instance, water would have killed her faster than the soda.

-LOL- :word:

Okay, okay, but have you looked at how some of the ingredients are described or labeled?

Why should some of the ingredients in a beverage created, labeled, and marketed to children be listed as hazardous and or caustic materials? What's up with that?!?

Sometimes, volume is everything. The hydrogen peroxide in toothpaste and the alcohol in mouthwash have positive benefits to oral hygiene. But, ingesting large amounts of either of those can cause sickness or death.

As Alfred would say, "Know your limits, Mr. Wayne."

Losing their daughter is already a severe punishment.

I'm not sure what years of hard time would prove.

I would have to know if they felt sincere remorse. At they very least they should have any remaining children taken away, and be registered as offenders.

If there was a history of abuse, I would lock them up and throw away the key.

They're unfit to be parents. That's for sure.

They should never be allowed near children again.

Punishing a little girl by forcing her to drink soda until she dies is hardly less a murder than the killer in Se7en forcing a glutton to eat spaghetti until his death.

Now, to be fair, this does assume that they knew that drinking all that soda would kill her, which seems unlikely.

This is child abuse, but it's not tantamount to murder (which would be intentional).

This is manslaughter, unless they can prove intent to kill.

The parents might not have known that drinking so much soda would kill the child. But once she became ill they did not take her to a hospital for hours. The girl was screaming in agony for hours and they did nothing. They probably didn't want to have to admit to abusing her so they avoided getting her medical help until it was too late to save her life. That's what elevates this beyond mere abuse.

Whatever happened to just flushing all the soda down the toilet and making the kid feel ashamed they forced you to do it? That always worked with us.

This story is just sad on so many different levels.

Exactly, the amount they forced her to drink (a 5 year old) is above and beyond what any parent with common sense would allow their chilren to drink.

Most people are aware of damage such drinks can do when consumed in large quantities.

You must assume that the child was crying the entire time, and showing signs of illness during the period of drinking all this soda. Some sort of throwing up, pleading from the child for them to stop, gagging, choking, etc.

This ****ing disgusts me. I hope they throw the book at them.

This is incredibly horrible to do this to a child & over a soda of all stupid things!!! It's just unforgivable in regards to the parents.

On a scale of 1 to Honey Boo Boo how redneck do you think this family is?

At least they'll have to live with this haunting them for the rest of their years.

I'd probably give them a -1 due their complete idiotic behavior towards the poor child. They also should be forbidden to have children again, imo.

So you're saying they're not rednecks at all.

Who knows, but one thing for sure is they're completely unfit to raise children. You don't have to be a redneck to be incredibly stupid to do things such as these people. Look no further than a lot of people in Florida.

I'd say it doesn't matter how redneck they are, but its painfully obvious how stupid they are.

All very valid points.

I'd say a 7, just because of the fact that it was grape soda, and that it belonged to an adult.

Also, I would not consider Honey Boo Boo the "10" on that scale. "10" would have to be Fred Phelps or the people in Winter's Bone.

She died from being abused. There is your intent. Their intent was to cause her pain and as a result she is dead. You don't get to abuse a kid and then be like, "I didn't know it would kill her".
