Thats totaly what i was gonna say
Washes building up lighter to darker tones of grey then the final black.Your style would benefit and compliment

The only problem I have with 'washes' is can't seem to control the brush, that it becomes smudgy.... I need to put more practice on that somehow...

Right i hear that.Watercolor in general is the toughest medium..
If its becoming "smudgy"-as you say-It sounds to me like your overworking it
Try some practice pieces with quick sketches that you wouldnt care about ruining...Also theres a Gauche/ink "Wash Off" technique out there that i think would be good for you..Try google for a step-by-step
Ink work is tough!
If anyone remembers "Chasing Amy"("your just the inker!")that was so bs...
