Pixels

And really, I think Columbus was much better back in the 80's and 90's. He's gone full-generic since Harry Potter.

I'm thinking this may be number one that weekend unless there's another big thing opening the week prior. Mad Max and Pitch Perfect sequels I don't think will score that massive.

In the high-concept sci-fi action comedy Pixels, aliens misinterpret satellite feeds of classic arcade video games such as Space Invaders and Centipede as a declaration of war and launch an attack on earth using the same eight-bit characters and strategies.

In the Chris Columbus-directed film, the U.S. president (Kevin James) recruits his childhood friends to help save the country. Back in 1982, his three buddies were arcade prodigies, but cut to the present day: “They’re really three losers,” laughs Columbus. They’ve ended up a TV mechanic (Adam Sandler), a felon (Peter Dinklage), and a conspiracy theorist (Frozen‘s Josh Gad). But, they’re still the best guys for the job, and after teaming up with a more up-to-date weapons expert (True Detective‘s Michelle Monaghan), they have no choice but to be ready for battle.
Shown above in their suits for the first time, the so-called Arcaders are on their way to take down Pac-Man. “They’re actually becoming sort of cultural heroes at this point. It’s a very important shot in the film,” says Columbus.

“I feel very fortunate to be able to do a movie that feels extraordinarily original and unique,” says Columbus, who’s still in production. “It’s a little bit of an homage to Ghostbusters and all those great Amblin movies of the eighties—not only the movies that I was involved in like The Goonies and Gremlins—but the movies I loved when I was working there like Back to the Future.”
They even managed to add in some throwback hair with Dinklage’s aggressive mullet. “We thought, ‘Someone has to sport the mullet in the movie,’” says Columbus. So they settled on Dinklage. “His character has been in prison. He’s the only one who’s still trapped in the eighties a bit,” he says.
But hair and tone aside, the classic video games will be the main draw for kids of a certain age. Exactly which games and characters Columbus and crew will be paying homage to is a bit of a mystery, though. Sure, it’s safe to assume Pac-Man, Centipede, and Space Invaders, but the Home Alone director wouldn’t reveal anything else. “I don’t want to ruin the surprise,” he said, adding: “We managed to tip our hat to all of the classics.”
And yet, even though nostalgia reigns supreme, Pixels (out May 15, 2015) won’t look like Tron. Columbus is taking things to the next level visually: “From a visual effects standpoint, audiences are going to be seeing things that they’ve never seen before. To be quite honest, a lot of visual effects movies cover the same territory whether it’s destroying a city or superhero visual effects, they tend to have a certain amount of intense HD reality,” he says. “[Here] we’re taking classic eight-bit characters and turning them into fully realized, three-dimensional, pixelated characters that are quite threatening.” Didn’t you always wonder what Ms. Pac-Man was packing under that little red bow?

I confess I'm curious to see what they look like.

This movie has such an amazing concept. I can't stand that this is the creative team that is adapting the short film.

Comic-Con: Sony Pictures Reveals the Video Game Characters in Pixels

July 21, 2014

Sony Pictures Entertainment announced today that the studio has brought together an extraordinary number of iconic video game companies, whose classic characters including PAC-MAN, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Galaga, Frogger, Q*bert, and Space Invaders will be featured in the action comedy Pixels, starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad, and Brian Cox, and directed by Chris Columbus. The film will be released on May 15, 2015.

In Pixels, when intergalactic aliens misinterpret video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them, they attack the Earth, using the games as models for their various assaults. President Will Cooper (James) has to call on his childhood best friend, '80s video game champion Sam Brenner (Sandler), now a home theater installer, to lead a team of old-school arcaders (Dinklage and Gad) to defeat the aliens and save the planet. Monaghan plays the team's unique weapons specialist. The action-comedy is directed by Chris Columbus from a story by Tim Herlihy and a screenplay by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling, based on the original short film of the same name by Patrick Jean. The film is produced by Adam Sandler, Chris Columbus, Mark Radcliffe, and Allen Covert. Executive Producers are Barry Bernardi, Michael Barnathan, Jack Giarraputo, Heather Parry, Tim Herlihy, Steve Koren, Patrick Jean, Benjamin Darras, Johnny Alves, Matias Boucard, Seth Gordon, and Ben Waisbren. The film, a Columbia Pictures presentation in association with LStar Capital, is a Happy Madison / 1492 Films production in association with One More Production.

Companies with classic arcade games that are teaming with Sony Pictures on the film include:

- Atari Interactive: (Asteroids, Breakout, Centipede and Missile Command)
- Konami Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd. (Frogger)
- BANDAI NAMCO Games Inc. (PAC-MAN, Galaga, and Dig Dug)
- Nintendo (Donkey Kong)
- Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. (Q*bert)
- Taito Corporation (Space Invaders)
- Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (Joust, Defender, Robotron and Wizard of Wor)

Commenting on the announcement, the film's director, Chris Columbus, said, "There would be no way to make the movie without these legendary characters they are as important to the film as the roles that Adam, Kevin, Michelle, Peter, Josh, and Brian are playing. It was a real thrill to see everything come together exactly as we envisioned it, and we're grateful to have all of these fantastic companies on board."

Producer Allen Covert added, "These classic characters are part of the DNA of the project, so it was critical that we work together to bring them on board. Fortunately, they were all extremely receptive. We approached them with a deep love for their characters and a respect for the elements that make them unique and iconic, and we've worked with the companies to incorporate those elements into the film."

At Comic-Con San Diego, from July 24-27, arcaders 13 years of age and older with Comic-Con badges will have the chance to engage with many of these classic original arcade games and try them out again as the studio features a Pixels Electric Dreams Factory arcade at the Hard Rock Hotel, 209 5th Ave., San Diego.

"There's no better way for the core Comic-Con audience to interact with the movie than to get a hands-on refresher on the games that will be a part of it," said Dwight Caines, president, Theatrical Marketing for Sony Pictures.

Dig Dug? **** me.

Uh, with Sandler in this movie... count me out. And Dinklage's mullet is freaking terrible.

Since this is an Adam Sandler movie, when can we expect Rob Schneider and David Spade to show up?

Futurama did this already, didn't they? I might check this out for Dinklage.

Calling it now these three will be the best part of the movie.

How is Josh Gad one of the 3 buddies from school? He would have been 1 years old back in 1982. I hope its explained and they don't expect us to believe he's in his mid 40s

I loved the short.

Looking forward to the trailer for this.

He's not. James and Sandler are the buddies and Dinklage is their former nemesis. Gad's just a member of their team.

The Adam Sandler and Peter Dinklage-led comedy "Pixels" has been pushed back by two months from May 15th 2015 to July 24th 2015. The Sony film, which was to open against "Mad Max: Fury Road," will now open against the "Poltergeist" remake and comedian Amy Schumer's comedy debut.

Yeah, that's pretty much counterprogramming for the chicks and the horror fans. Kids and nostalgic adults will probably check it out now.

Space Invaders, <Do Not Know>, Pac-Man, Centipede

What's the 2nd one?
