I had a chance to see the Director's Cut of PT the other day and it'll be released on October 16th. Below are my personal thoughts on the movie and a few details on the added scenes, although they were tougher to spot if you've seen the original cut of it.
I made no bones about preferring PT to Death Proof in a review from a few weeks back, basically saying DP was an incredibly frustrating experience and was 95% boring dialogue and 5% meh car chase. Thankfully, Planet Terror hits the ground running and aside from some pacing issues in the 2nd act, almost never stops running.
The movie opens with the Machete trailer and sets the tone for the movie. It's awesome. The movie then satirizes and embraces elements from the horror movies of the late 70's, early 80's zombie movies and takes you on a ride. Basically, there's not a lot of fat in the movie so things move along at a brisk pace and is a joy to watch. I actually rank this movie as among Rodriguez's best as I find him to be a hit or miss director. It's a hit, even if the box office receipts didn't match up. It was tailor made for DVD though.
8/10 I love it
About the missing scenes, it's worth noting 2 things:
1) If you've seen the shorter version that was in theaters, you might not notice a lot of the additions. Many are just small character moments, a bit more gore, or a few lines of dialogue. There is no lap dance equivalent.
2) The missing reel is NOT included in the movie. I don't think they ever shot footage to end the 2nd act, nor the sex scene, but it still works to great effect.
The extra scenes from what I gather:
-One I really liked of the Blocks waking up at 8, and only revealing that it's 8pm by opening up their window shades, setting up their night shift.
-A bit more gore when one of the officers is killed by zombies. The brain being ripped out is shown a few more frames, and was cited as being the only major MPAA issue.
-A bit more talking between Doc Block and the amputee doctor about the cause of the disease. A lot of doc babble.
-A few more beats of Michael Bien trying to get the BBQ receipe.
-The creepy assistant to Doc Block is shown getting his liver eaten by zombies and dying.
That's about all I remember. But yeah, pick up Planet Terror and enjoy
