I had a chance to see the Director's Cut of PT the other day and it'll be released on October 16th. Below are my personal thoughts on the movie and a few details on the added scenes, although they were tougher to spot if you've seen the original cut of it.

I made no bones about preferring PT to Death Proof in a review from a few weeks back, basically saying DP was an incredibly frustrating experience and was 95% boring dialogue and 5% meh car chase. Thankfully, Planet Terror hits the ground running and aside from some pacing issues in the 2nd act, almost never stops running.

The movie opens with the Machete trailer and sets the tone for the movie. It's awesome. The movie then satirizes and embraces elements from the horror movies of the late 70's, early 80's zombie movies and takes you on a ride. Basically, there's not a lot of fat in the movie so things move along at a brisk pace and is a joy to watch. I actually rank this movie as among Rodriguez's best as I find him to be a hit or miss director. It's a hit, even if the box office receipts didn't match up. It was tailor made for DVD though.

8/10 I love it

About the missing scenes, it's worth noting 2 things:

1) If you've seen the shorter version that was in theaters, you might not notice a lot of the additions. Many are just small character moments, a bit more gore, or a few lines of dialogue. There is no lap dance equivalent.
2) The missing reel is NOT included in the movie. I don't think they ever shot footage to end the 2nd act, nor the sex scene, but it still works to great effect.

The extra scenes from what I gather:

-One I really liked of the Blocks waking up at 8, and only revealing that it's 8pm by opening up their window shades, setting up their night shift.
-A bit more gore when one of the officers is killed by zombies. The brain being ripped out is shown a few more frames, and was cited as being the only major MPAA issue.
-A bit more talking between Doc Block and the amputee doctor about the cause of the disease. A lot of doc babble.
-A few more beats of Michael Bien trying to get the BBQ receipe.
-The creepy assistant to Doc Block is shown getting his liver eaten by zombies and dying.

That's about all I remember. But yeah, pick up Planet Terror and enjoy :)

 how did you get to see the Director's cut ???

even tho, I suspected that was never shot, i wished there were more in that sex scene. :o

Those scenes sound pretty good. :yay:

I work at Blockbuster and we get some movies about 2 weeks in advance. We also got The Hoax (8/10), Transformers (8/10), Casshern, and a Mighty Heart early, too

Aren't they releasing a 'Grindhouse' edition that has the entire theatrical experience intact (two films B2B w/ trailers) ???

CFE

I imagine they will, especially if the sales for the 2 movies individually do well. It might also be the only way we get the trailers on DVD, but for a release date on that kinda package, I haven't heard anything, just rumors of a December release

Casshern? you guys only just getting this on dvd? its been out years

Thank god.

That was the only thing I was worried about. The missing reel was used brilliantly, it would lose part of its charm with those scenes in. Plus it keeps the momentum of the film up, and you can pretty easily infer what happened in those missing scenes anyway.

Definitely going to pick this up.

It may've been available as an import but if it's been available in a place like Best Buy, then I don't know. Rental-wise, I guess they haven't released it here till now

Planet Terror was FAR superior to Death Proof which everyone is getting boners about over here in the UK simply because it's Tarintino. They even released it at the cinema for that sole reason. When I tell people that it's part of a double feature and the other movie is awesome, they think I making it up and say "How can you see it on DVD when it's not even out yet?". Morons

For anyone who watched RR's 10 minute film school, he announces at the end that there will be a Grindhouse 2 Disc Edition. Just putting it out there.

Finally got to see Planet Terror last week and i think its an amazing movie, i LOVE both this and Death Proof (the longer versions, havent seen the shorter ones). Some of the best action of the year along with some of the coolest characters and some surprisingly good acting.

Also, how goddamn ****ing cool was it to see Michael Biehn in a movie again.

Both PT and DP get a 8.5/10 from me.

I wish they'd release this Japanese edition with English subs somewhere. I would have bought it already, but no subs is major no-no for me. Plus the menus are in Japanese so it's a little guessing game too.

And that set is around $130.

argh! Japanese get the killer Kill Bill set as well as Grind House...Region 1 is disapointing me here.

That doesn't sound bad at all. I liked Planet Terror much more than Death Proof.

Where the hell is the region 1 versions of these movies, seriously?

I actually cant pick a winner between the 2 because i like them so much. I thought QT's movie was crafted better, and a better made movie, but Planet Terror was just complete and utter fun, and more of a Grindhouse movie as well.

Deathproof was a better tribute to grindhouse flicks as far as I'm concerned. Planet Terror had too much in the way of CGI to be so. But PT was definitely more fun, I thought.

Exactly. Death Proof was a bit bland for my taste, especially the last act's setting. Planet Terror, though, was a lot of fun, and it's one of my favorites from 2007.

For those of you who missed Grindhouse in theatres and wish they could've seen it on the big screen here are some quasi-good news...

Planet Terror is going to be released in theatres in Mexico starting May 9th, so those of you who live near Mexico can cross south of the border and catch RR's half of Grindhouse.

Death Proof is released April 18.

So Mexico is getting Grindhouse but they're not getting Grindhouse at the same time.
