A St. Joseph police officer was accidentally killed by another officer Wednesday after a special training exercise had concluded, police officials said.
Patrol Officer Dan De Kraai, a five-year veteran of the department, was shot in the back when another officer was demonstrating something to him, said Police Chief Chris Connally.
Additional details, and the identity of the officer who fired the shot, were not disclosed. The officer who fired the shot was placed on administrative leave.
The incident occurred at 2:17 p.m. at the old Neely School during Special Response Team training. Mr. Connally said live ammunition was not used during the training and the incident occurred while the officers were on break.
Mr. De Kraai was shot once in the back, Mr. Connally said. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Several police units were on the scene after the accident and the street around the school was closed off. The former school, located at 1909 S. 12th St., closed after the 2009 academic year and has been used for Special Response Team police training on occasion since then.
Since 1886, 14 law enforcement officers have died while on duty in Buchanan County.
The last St. Joseph police officer killed in the line of duty was Officer Brad Arn, who was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance near 22nd Street and Frederick Boulevard on Nov. 10, 1998.
A total of 117 law enforcement officer fatalities were reported in the United States as of Monday, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund in Washington, D.C.
Thats a 43 percent increase from this time last year.

So I just get back from shopping for new clothes and body wash right? I walk in and my mom tells me that a cop shot another cop here in town, on accident. But I guess it happened in a training course, where no live ammo was supposed to be used - the cop still used live ammo.
