Poltergeist Remake Coming on November 24, 2010!

I'm honestly curious how this will develop. The original has a weird vibe to it, and a strange ending (the house getting sucked into a portal, thanks Steven). But Lucifer bless that clown doll, the tree, and the "cemeteries next to housing developments" plot points. It messed up so many kids in the 80's & 90's, especially the clown doll...

But Poltergeist is an essential film from my childhood. They can only change so much till it becomes a mess.

I put my dolls inside my closet each night for a very long time cause of that darn clown. Hell, to this day that scene still freaks me out :hehe:

Halloween: :wow: no way in hell i would buy that thing... i'd kick it out of my room every night for sure :oldrazz:

What stands out to me about the original is how well it really captures 80s suburbia. I don't know if the plot makes a whole lot of sense, usually victims of a horror movie transgress in some way while this family seems to be no worse than any other family in the same neighborhood. The whole "the house is clean now" plot point is basically contradicted 10 minutes later, perhaps ostensibly because it likely didn't have a third act in its original form. But, some of the randomness of the story is perhaps why it's still fairly effective, you can put your self in the same place.

(I'll also note that JoBeth Williams is perhaps the original MILF. Worth noting that she's 32 and her 16 year old daughter, you do the math, has a big hickey at the climax and enjoys ice cream and pickles in the film.)

I've no idea how you update it to make it relevant to the 21st century and yet still faithful to the original, beyond being set in the suburbs. Other than updating the special effects, hard to see where it wouldn't be twisted into something else.

JoBeth was hot, no doubt. What happened to her in Poltergeist 2 though? Did her hair really change everything?

The "house is clean" doesn't contradict anything if it was actually clean at the time. If "the beast" was strong enough to poke a hole into our world, then it was surely strong enough to come back and do it again. Plus, it turns out the place wasn't simply intruded on, the house was built over the grave yard.

The big difference will be that the family in the movie now have an 50 inch LCD-tv... ;)

Actually, I think they should have went the route of "computers", because in this day and age parents worry about their children getting online with "predators". That is the common fear of this day and that is what the remake should hone in on.

Why do this?

And yes Jo Beth was damn fine in the first film.

^^ I have to agree, I mean, tons of horror films that were famous are being remade and wil lbe remade in the future. Puppet Master's being remade, Childs Play, Hellraiser, etc.

But do you really think anyone cares about puppet master?

Thats like one of the most obscure films.

What's amazing is that it will still be cool for the kids to own a ton of Star Wars toys.

But ugh, I hate this idea. It's always been one of my favorite haunted house films, and it's still surprisingly scary.

I guess it was inevitable that someone would remake it, but I don't have to like it.

True, but I actually thought it was pretty well known. I still own some figures from the 90's, lol.
What I mean is I don't think people are gonna go how can you touch a classic, their ruining it. But i'm sure some people will though, knowing them.

oh, well, honestly, I do think it eeded a remake. I think it could work very well as a remake in present day. Also, yes, I agree. Didn't the director of the original say he was going to direct the remake?

Poltergeist was the reason I never slept with my closet doors open when I was a kid. :wow:

Something else they're going to have to change - TV stations rarely sign off anymore (at least I don't think they do), the ghosts were able to communicate whenever the TV signal was lost and the picture fuzzed out.

So, there's another spooky moment lost. :csad:

I don't know,I don't pay much attention to those movies.

I know, sometimes i don't even know why i bother looking at comments, cause most of the time its usually negative.
Which is all alot of people do. Compplain, complain, complain. I mean, yeah, there should be complaining about fimls....when it's necessary. Sometimes, people do it for no reason.

As long as you can see what the negative have to say. Some just complain, but some have points. (remember it's the internet where logic and reason don't apply)

I personally don't mind remakes because the theory of the new movies canceling out the old is false to me.

For example, people still talk about Burton's Batman films, along with the original Willy Wonka.

I think a lot of the times, when there's a remake going on, it's being made for the wrong reasons. Instead of making it fresh take, it's just a dumbed dumb modern version that looks nice. Like The Taking of Pedum 123. The original one is ten times better.

Also, there is an over-saturation of remakes right now. They need to calm down on it. It's nice to have a movie like DISTRICT 9 out there.
