Raven

Looks like DC is looking at adapting the character Raven for the small screen. here is the writeup form Variety:

Another DC Comics superheroine could be on her way to primetime.

The CW is looking to adapt "Raven," a half-demon also known as Rachel Roth, into a series. Diego Gutierrez, who most recently served as co-exec VP on "V," is writing and will exec produce.

Project has a script order at the CW through Warner Bros. TV and DC Entertainment.

In DC Comics mythology, Raven -- created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez -- is the daughter of a human and a demon who has empath abilities to read emotions and divine secrets.

Raven, who's able to teleport herself and enter the minds of others, uses her skills to fight crime while trying to keep her dark internal elements in check.

"Raven" reps the latest attempt by the C-Dub to find a suitable comic-themed replacement for "Smallville," which is set to retire at the end of this season.

"Raven" isn't the only DC Comics star in development this year; David E. Kelley is also prepping his take on "Wonder Woman." But that project hasn't yet landed at a network.

"Raven" actually has some history at the CW: The character was featured in the animated Kids' WB series "Teen Titans," which ran for several years (including Kids' WB's brief run as the CW's Saturday morning kids block). Tara Strong voiced Raven in the series, which also featured Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy and Cyborg.

Coming full circle, the last time the CW looked to adapt a DC Comics character, it turned to Robin. In 2008, the netlet gave a committment to "The Graysons," which was to follow the world of Dick "DJ" Grayson before he took on the iconic Robin identity and aligned himself with Batman.

"The Graysons" didn't move forward, however, after Warner Bros. Pictures Group prexy Jeff Robinov decided he didn't want the series to run simultaneous with Christopher Nolan's "Batman" movie franchise. (Nolan was said at the time not to be pleased with the idea either).

But "Raven" is free of any other programming committments, beyond those "Teen Titans" repeats, now running on Boomerang.

Other previous DC titles in development at the CW include "Global Frequency." And in 2002, the WB turned the "Batman" spinoff "Birds of Prey" into a series -- but it proved short-lived.

Fox's "Human Target" is also based on a DC title.

Gutierrez spent several seasons on "Without a Trace." His other credits include "The Shield," "Kingpin," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Dawson's Creek."

Not really something I'd immediately jump on board to see, but it makes perfect sense for The CW to want a series like this.

How interesting that this show already has a network basically and WW doesnt.

I don't see how this would work without the Titans, but I'll tune in.

As long as it's in the vein of Smallville, Supernatural, TVD, and Nikita, as opposed to teen trash like Gossip Girl, 90210, One Tree Hill, etc.

I think it would work fine. She is trying to escape her fathers forces so she comes to this realm to try and blend in. He sends demons after her to find her and she fights some bad guys, and probably gets some Titan cameos.

Well I could see this happening. It would be a replacement for Smallville and still cater to the female population that the CW wants. Still, there are better female superheroes to do.

i really hope every DC live action tv series doesnt go straight to CW. This is gonna end up like vampire diaries or something.

If it ends up Vampire Diaries we'd be lucky, considering that show is pretty flipping great. It's not a teeny bopper show in the least. It's a mystery show with vampires and it's pretty badass.

Wow, that was just straight out the blue. They just randomly threw 2nd tier DC character names in a bag and picked, it sounds like. Give Ferro Lad his own show while you're at it.

This sounds like they picked the one hero girl who might resonate with the Twilight generation

Right now shows like "Vampire Diaries", "True Blood", "Being Human" are small hits after the popularity of the "Twilight" film franchise. You also had shows like "Buffy", "Angel" that were hits this past decade. There is a maket for dark drama/fantasy genre right now and that may be why they are looking at "Raven".

Yeah, I know.

I'm more worried that they may ignore the Titans characters altogether, when they're such an important part of her life in every media she's been portrayed in. I hope they have the rights cleared for these characters too so they'll have no excuse for not using them.

So, who do we want cast as Raven?

The best part of this concept is the possible superhero cameos.

Hopefully that's the direction they'll go in.

Also, it better not be the awful "before they were heroes" thing the CW likes to do. Yes, lets make a show about Clark Kent before he became Superman, and about Dick Grayson before he became Robin. Genius.

This should be a show about Raven. Not a show about Raven before she was Raven.

I hope they make her a great role model and not try to sex her up like alot of super heroines. If they do it right, it could be really cool!

This reminds me of the mini series Wolfman did a few years back. I love Raven but I feel mixed on this idea, mainly due to not feeling that's she's the right character to make a solo media push for. Of course, it could work in the right hands (anything could). I'd hope that a series like this would really delve into the seedier and stranger sections of the DCU. Something that felt more like Vertigo than supernatural teen drama.

I wonder if they're still thinking of attempting Blue Beetle. I'd love to see the character adapted, though I do have SFX worries.

This oddly interests me. :huh::up:

I can't help but think it's gonna try to be Buffy mixed with Vampire Diaries.

If it's on CW, it won't be catering to DC Comics fans.

I was hoping DC Ent would launch some shows on Fox to complement Human Target.

Definitely unexpected. I'm intrigued though...Anyone hoping to see a Mr. Grayson?

Jeff Robinov won't allow Dick Grayson or any other Batman related characters to appear on The CW.

It's stated straight up in the original article.

That was the reason Brian Peterson/Kelly Sounder's "DJ" Grayson pilot idea got canned.

Warners wants live action Batman characters only in the films.

Ah, I missed that.

I wonder which network WW may end up on.

Hopefully WW is canned or turned into a movie project. She's well overdue for a movie.

Who would you guys want to play Raven? I think Malese Jow would be a dead ringer for the character.
