just read it today
modern-wise, best arc in memory is Venomous. i love millar, you should all read Image's Wanted - brilliant idea :) I'll post some venomous pics later

"Wanted" is the best comic in the history of comics. Period.

My favorite Spidey arc...? Wow....that's a tough one. Alot of my favorite Spidey stories are one-shots and such.

My favorite Spidey story would probably be "Spider-Man: Blue". Great story. Silver age feel with the modern day storytelling. Beautiful book.

Amazing Spider-man #31-#33. And all the Hobgoblin arcs that Roger Stern wrote. Great stuff.

Kraven's Last Hunt
Death of Green Goblin/Gwen Stacy
Death of Harry Osborn
Revelations (Norman's return)
Hobgoblin's origin
The Child Within
Spider-Hunt
Identity Crisis (Chameleon discovers Spidey's ID)
Goblins at the Gate

Hobgoblin Lives
Secret Wars
Death Of Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy
Maximum Carnage
Venom On Trial
Sinister Six saga

Tough one, but I'd say my favorite is either:
ASM #121-122 (Death of Gwen Stacy and the Green Goblin)
SSM #200 (Death of Harry Osborn)

In no particular order:

"If This Be My Destiny"--Has everything a Spider-Man fan can ask for: the greatest villain (Doc Ock), a reminder of Peter's sense of resposibility, the misunderstands. A classic.
"Kraven's Last Hunt"--A trippy, and dark and gritty Spider-Man tale that's actually good, and still the best of it's kind.
"Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut"--Best superhero vs. supervillain battle BAR NONE.
"The Night Gwen Stacy Died"--A must read for any Spider-Man fan and a good story besides.
"The Child Within"--great psychological tale that explores the friendship/animosity/"sibling rivalry" between Peter and Harry, as well as how the sins of the father have an impact on their sons.
Marvel Knights Spider-Man #1-12--perfect for the action junkie in all of us, although not perfect by any means.
Spider-Man: Blue--Stan Lee and John Romita redux done right.
Spider-Man: Death and Destiny--a "continuation" of the death of Captain George Stacy that actually expands and deepens the original story.

I think mine would be Spider-Man Blue, I really did love that. Thinking about it, may have to give it a read tonight.

I agree that most listed so far are great stories...

Here are a few of my favorites that haven't been listed yet:

Amazing Spider-Man #248
"The Kid who Collected Spider-Man"

Spectacular Spider-Man #14 (Vol. 2)
http://www.spiderfan.org/comics/reviews/spiderman_spectacular_v2/014.html

Spider-Man's Tangled Web, #7, 8 & 9
"Gentleman's Agreement"

http://www.thefourthrail.com/reviews/snapjudgments/122401/spidermanstangledweb9.shtml

If you all have not read that last one, I HIGHLY recommend it.

i dont have arcs, i have eras. spider-man from the 80's through to the early 90's

Likewise, I enjoy a lot of the stuff mentioned here.

One on top of my head that wasn't mentioned is . . .

Amazing Spider-Man #88 - #90 (Vol 1)
Death of Captain Stacy

Peter Parker: Spider-Man #44 - #47 (Vol 2)
"A Death In The Family"

Spider-Man #1 - #5 (Vol 1)
"Torment"

Amazing Spider-Man #11 - #12 (Vol 1)
"Turning Point!/Unmasked By Doctor Octopus!"

Amazing Spider-Man #50 (Vol 1)
"Spider-Man No More"

I'll probably think of a few later.

Some great choices. Im gonna have to read diferent titles soon. So far I have only read "The Amazing Spider-Man" series, and a few specific issues on the other titles.

The Ultimate Spider-Man looks interesting so maybe I will pick up a few copies.

It seems as though people are focusing mostly on classic old stories...

Recently I have liked:
"The life and Death of Spiders" ASM (Vol. 2) #47-48

"Bad Connections" #49-50, where he reconciles with Mary Jane.

I liked the following "Digger" arc too.

The Hydra arc really had me hooked.
(JMS can write good Spider-Man, which makes his crap all that much harder to swallow.)

MKSM #1 -12 was awesome (weak ending aside). It probably solidified my addiction to Spider-man comics, as it was one of the first arcs I started reading.

I can't believe no one has mentioned "Spider-Man and the Human Torch" mini. GREAT read!

no surprise

ASM 121-122 The Death of Gwen Stacy

Current

Spider-man:Blue

Edited to add "A death in the family" and "Spidey-Human Torch" mini (since Cap just reminded me) as distant but very reputable runners up in current

you're right. spider-man/human torch was really good

No way i can pick just one story arc. Besides all the obvious classics, i guess i'll pick two that have special sentimental value to me personally;

The Green Goblin Returns from ASM #176 through #180...

The Death Of Aunt May/Return Of The Burglar from ASM #196 through #200...

I highly recommend both those arcs.

Here are a few of my favorites that haven't been listed yet:

Amazing Spider-Man #248
"The Kid who Collected Spider-Man"

The kid who collected spider-man is the only time a comic book ever brought me to tears. One of the greatest spidey stories of all time.

The commuter cometh (ASM #265, I believe,), one of the funniest spidey stories of all time.

My favorite Spidey story would be The Osborn Journal + Revelations. just reading the one shot before digging into Revelations, knowing everything thats going to happen in just 24 short comic hours, awesome. Plus there's the whole reading ASM 418 with no prior spoilers, and me getting to that infamous final panal and just thinking out loud "WHOAH!!!!"

That effect has happened very few times in the 3/4 of my life reading comic books, during ASM 300 my very first comic book, and of course the equally famous ending to Thunderbolts 1, however in Peter Parker 75 it happened a lot, from the extremely poetic introduction between little Normie Osborn and a "stranger" on Halloween night all the way to the Goblin getting blown to hell and back, the story had me waiting in anticipation for months and than keeping on the edge of my seat the entire time, the story deserved its hype.

It was awesome

I don't really know if I have one single favorite. There's just to many to name.

"Kravens last Hunt" - I still remember thinking that Kraven was one of the lamest villains in the Spider verse. Maybe he still is. But damn J. M. Dematteis found a way to turn him into one of the biggest threats for Spidey. I can never get tired of reading this story. From the perfect characterizations to the beautiful artwork. This is a story that every Spider-man fan has to read easily.

"Nothing can stop the Juggernaut" - Easily the best battle I've ever seen in a comic book. The classic example of David and Goliath. To see Spidey not give up and continue on against a villain that regularly toys with the entire X-men. This was Spidey at his best.

"The Shreiking" - I know alot of people have a problem with this dark era for Spider-man but this story really fleshed out the character of Shreik. It's a shame that it seems like no writer has any plans for her. This story proved that she has enough substance to be a prime time villain. It also didn't hurt to have Bagley on it either.

"Firelord" - Second to the Juggernaut for my favorite fight. I didn't enjoy it nearly as much but still one of the best fights Spidey had been a part of. Firelord was so arrogant in this fight even and Spidey manages to get the upperhand by using a ton of tricks around New York.

I'll stick away from putting the death of gwen stacy on the list cause it seems like that's usually the answer for everyone and rightfully so. Ton of other's I missed. Too tired to go through them now.

The Death of Jean Dewolf
Kraven's Last Hunt
Amazing 39 & 40-Goblin/Spidey unmasking
Amazing 53-57-Classic Doc Ock story
Amazing 136-137-Harry becomes the Green Goblin
Amazing 196-200- The Burgler/Mysterio/death of Aunt May arc
Amazing 238-39,244-45,249-51 The Original Hobgoblin Saga
Amazing 50-52 Spider-Man no more/1st Kingpin
MK Spider-Man 1-12
Spectacular Spider-Man 25-31 1st Carrion story

Also I like The Doc Ock story arc from Spectacular Spider-Man 73-79 alot,I felt this story really nailed his character.

The Norman becoming the Goblin again from Amazing 61-66 and Spectacular Spider-Man magazine 2 is another one I really like.Always felt the Lee version of Norman provided the best drama for a tension filled story.

I'm just guessing, but I think most people here, who name the story in their top ten, read it for the first time well AFTER it actually happened. I think that perspective helps the story. If I had just read it as a current story... I probably would have been so incredulous and MAD I might have even quit reading for awhile. :(

When I started reading SM comics, I got all the Essentials and devoured them. (So much fun.) When I got to ASM 120, even though I knew what was coming, it was still very sad... And I missed the lighter tone of the stories, because it got kinda grim and depressing after that. I can see now, it was a pivotal story... made history and all that... but I don't really care to read it over and over.

Anyone read it for the first time when it happened?

See, I actually beg to differ. I believe reading it when it first came out would add to the overrall feeling of it. Maybe that's why it isn't my hands down favorite because I only read it for the first time a few years ago. Don't get me wrong, I love the story. But I really think that's a story that needs to be read WITHOUT knowing the outcome before hand.

Unlike stories like Kraven's Last Hunt and so on...where the beauty of the story is how it's paced and put together....instead of a "shocking" cliffhanger.
