The 1982 film? Yes, I've seen it a few times. But when I watch it, I approach it with the knowledge that it is a 30yr old film and for it's time, was fresh and innovative (ironic, given that it is actually a loose remake of an earlier film).

30 years later, this new film doesn't really bring anything to the table that we haven't seen before. I'd have preferred a sequel instead of a prequel, perhaps a story where some remaining part of the alien organism is taken away for analysis. This would thus give them the ability to move beyond the confines of that landscape and have the potential to bring something new to the genre. As it stands, this film complements the early film well, but in doing so, doesn't really stand out by itself - just more of the same.

:cmad: Why was all of this cut from the film?

studioADI have shared a behind-the-scenes look at the 2011 The Thing remake/prequel directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. In the new video you’ll see what happens in the alternate ending to the film, which depicts an alien pilot to the discovered spacecraft.

“The scripted ending to ‘The Thing (2011)’ featured Kate [played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead] inside the spacecraft, discovering the mummified remains of the pilot who first brought the craft to Earth, unleashing the Thing,” they explain. “A second pilot, still alive, attacks just as it mutates into a Thing version of itself. Shot but ultimately discarded in favor of a different direction, it gave us a great opportunity to design and build a unique alien life form and then push it into Thing territory when it changes.

“A full size animatronic/rod puppet provided physical elements on stage with a planned CG counterpart to flesh out the action. Watch The Thing Tom Woodruff Jr On Fire to see fire elements that were shot for what would have been the death of the CG pilot! All that burnin’ and nothing to do with it…“

I honestly think there was a tremendous film behind this prequel and yet whoever was in charge screwed the pooch big time. Maybe one of the biggest f*** ups in Hollywood history.

ADI's released another BTS video as to what would've likely looked awesome had everything not been replaced with CGI....

The plan was that there would be 3 versions of the Pilot in THE THING (2011). Here are two: the mummified Pilot, and the Thing having replicated itself as one of the alien crew members. In the story originally, the Thing needed to become one of these aliens in order to fly the ship buried under the ice. (Note the bio-mechanical connections implanted in the creature's back.)

ADI designed the character, built a limited animatronic puppet, and performed it on set.

The third Pilot was going to be a digital version of this creature, but due to a story change, it was never executed. The mummified Pilot was covered over with a digital energy effect, and we designed a new character, the Sanders-Thing, which was realized digitally.

That movie had so much potential and ended up being such a piece of crap. What a shame.

All they had to do was remove the alien scream near the end to keep the ambiguity nod to the original, but the director was too lazy to even have that simple edit done.
