so here's the set-up. I'm trying to move a 5.51 GB file from my laptop (HD #1) to my second ext HD (HD #3).

Laptop HD#1: ~17 GB free space
1st EHD HD#2: ~57 GB free space
2nd EHD HD#3: ~217 GB free space

So when I try to transfer the 5.51 GB file from 1 to 2 or 3, it says there's not enough disk space, when clearly there is.

I just transfered 54 GB of my "movie studio" (project files, sound effects, VFX) from 2 to 3 no problem.

Any help on this?

I had the same problem with my ipod. What I figured out, through trial and error, is that if a single file is more than a certain size, it just simply won't follow through.

For example, I had an 8 gigabyte hd movie file I had to move. I had plenty of space both ways, but it just wouldn't go through. I then tried a media folder I had which was 11 gigs, but that worked out fine. That's probably why your other transfer worked, because it was composed of many small files.

So your best is trying to split up the file in question. A gig per split is a safe bet.

FAT32 (i think) only has a 4gig file limt to transfer

(or was it NTFS)
