PS3 in 3D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLeOx2n1So4&NR=1

this video pretty much explains how the PS3s 3D is going to work. it'll be able to send the data to TVs with the right flags and multiplexing but it'll be only at around 720p for each view. the same must be true for it's playback of bluray 3D. so you can watch a film in 1080p in 2D or 720p 3D from a bluray 3D disc.

720p 3D actually has a similar level of effective detail to 1080p but isn't as good as 1080p 3D.
thats expected considering the vast majority of games are 720p. Theres only a handful that are natively 1080p

3D will not work at this point.
It´s not a fad, and it´s here to stay, but it needs to evolve.
If many people say that 3D gives them a headheach, many say they have them when watching Avatar, now image playing a video game, where you need to close follow characters jumping, shooting and whatnot.
Many say the get headheaches after playing 3D on the PC, so...
Besides, imo, 3D in gaming will only be meaningful without the glasses, something i´m expecting to see with Project Natal, not because it´s MS and all that crap, but because Johnny Lee, the man that made 3D with the Wii without glasses is working on it (but Greenberg already said that MS is not thinking about 3D at this point).

Now, on the Youtube video posted above...
Nothing changes, you still need to get a new TV, one with HDMI 1.4.

But the point is only one, sooner than later, all consoles will have 3D, not just the PS3, and with the 3D Over HDMI enabled by HDMI 1.4, the only one that can´t do it is the Wii (because doesn´t have HDMI).

I've had Nvidia 3d vision about a month or two now and never had any problems. It took a couple of days for my eyes to get use to depth perception, if I immediately turn the depth slider to full from the start I would get double vision and cockeyed, after a while all games were able to be put to be put to full without these problems.

I dont like he idea tbh. i like how things are atm, on a HDTV. i dont want it 3d lol

If you need a special tv to utilize this feature, then its not going to take off this console generation. Maybe next gen, but even then I dont see it being a standard

you'll notice that all the games demoed so far in 3d have been those that can be played at 1080p. either the original res or the frame rate needs to be cut for 3D.

360 doesn't even have HDMI 1.3

and johnney lee's "3D" is implimented in GT5. head tracking aint some thing he invented.

the only difference between this and HD is that people already upgraded their TV once this gen to take advantage of a feature (HD) that required a new TV.

If you have a 3D tv, DL Super Stardust HD. It has been given the 3D treatment and is the first game to go 3D. By all accounts it is amazing. I own the game and can tell you it is very fun even in 2D.

Hi everyone! The moment is here — starting tomorrow, high-definition stereoscopic 3D gaming will be available in your very own living rooms! As you already know, all PlayStation 3 systems are already equipped with everything they need to play stereoscopic 3D games. Thanks to a free firmware update released this past April, the PS3 system is the only console on the market that can support full stereoscopic 3D gaming — right from your living room, and with no additional charge.
Today, our sister company Sony Electronics announced its 3D capable BRAVIA HDTVs are now available for pre-sale and will ship to retailers later this month. There are a broad range of models available in different screen sizes, some packaged with active glasses and others without, giving consumers the option to choose which 3D entertainment solution works for them. For more information, click here.

We’re extremely excited to be at the helm of a whole new gaming experience unlike anything offered before. Starting tomorrow, the following games and demos will be available in stereoscopic 3D for anyone who owns a PS3 system and 3D television:
  • WipEout HD (full game): Experience the adrenalin rush of navigating the twists and turns of futuristic racetracks at breathtaking speeds like never before.
  • Super Stardust HD (full game): Experience asteroids fly past you as you navigate the deadly battleground — only a battle on a cosmic level will save the indigenous life below from destruction.
  • PAIN: The stereoscopic 3D content will include the Downtown area and tutorial along with three modes, including two new modes created specifically with stereoscopic 3D in mind, Alien Toss and Ice Breaker.
  • MotorStorm Pacific Rift (demo): MotorStorm Pacific Rift in stereoscopic 3D puts you in the driver’s seat of a buggy for a one track, single player race around the deadly Kanaloa Bay for a dangerously real battle against ruthless opponents.

To give PS3 and new 3D capable BRAVIA owners a sample of 3D entertainment at its best, 3D capable BRAVIA HDTVs will come with PlayStation Network vouchers to download these four stereoscopic 3D game experiences, which total more than 100 hours of gameplay.
We’re also announcing that The Fight: Lights Out will be available in stereoscopic 3D, combining PlayStation Move with 3D to deliver an immersive and realistic gaming experience unlike anything you’ve played before. This is only a small taste of the 3D experiences you can expect with the new 3D capable BRAVIA HDTVs and PS3. With new gaming experiences coming this year in the form of stereoscopic 3D gaming and PlayStation Move, as well as an expansive software line-up, the PS3 system truly does everything and continues to be at the forefront of innovation. In addition, 3D Blu-ray movie playback is coming to the PS3 this year via firmware update. Stay tuned for even more 3D news and announcements coming in the near future!

You need a 3-D Bravia. . . .That's a huge investment.

"Only" $1,797.00 :lmao:

Still gotta buy a 3-D TV for it to work.

$1797 is for the TV.

I spent a little under that much for my non 3D HDTV a couple of years ago. I think the price, for what you get, is very reasonable.

Like I said, I am not in the market for one and those are the first ones I found. With a bit more searching, one could find a lot better deals if they really wanted one.

I wont even consider a 3D TV until its under $800 and even that much, is something I cant afford right now

Same here. I am going to have to wait at least 2-3 years before I can even justify buying one.

I went to Best Buy yesterday and watched a 3D TV for the first time....and I didnt like it. Even if they were affordable, I dont think Id get one now. For one that thing made me nauseus and that was with 10 minutes of use. I cant see myself playing a game or watching a movie in 3D for 2 or more hours. While the effect is cool, I think the picture looks alot better in 2D. Another thing that bothered me were the glasses and I didnt find them to be comfortable at all. I think 3D is still very early in its development and it hasnt been properly ironed out. Things will definetly most likely change in time as developers and manufactuers find more ways to make it more effective and a better experience, but as of now, I dont think its really worth it. Considering its nearly $1000 less, give or take a couple of hundred for a comparable set w/o 3D, I dont think the feature justifies the hefty cost, at least not to me

Also, the prices on the glasses have to go down big time. Right now they're like $200 a pair, and I would not pay more than $30 a pair (and even that is a bit pricey). On top of that, there is no content available and it will probably give me headaches if I use it too much, so there's really no reason to pay for 3D at home. Once the novelty wears off it's pointless anyway, and that's why sales for 3D movies are dropping.

The kicker is, Sony's 3D glasses are non-rechargeable! So you spend $150 a pair and have to replace them when they die. At least Samsung offers you rechargeable ones, but since Sony is really pushing the tech hardcore, you would think they would as well. Not to mention Samsung glasses do not work with Sony TV's and vice versa.

really? Oh wow. I just assumed they were chargeable via USB. I guess I should have looked for a port. Man thats another strike against it. Its also dumb to hear that the glasses arent cross compatible with other manufacturers bc really there should be a standard that they all abide by. The technology has potential, but it isnt quite there yet

WTF!? You spend $200 on a pair of glasses that you can't even recharge!? That's even more ridiculous. I see 3D TV going no-where fast. It's just a darned shame that Sony wasted so much money putting Killzone 3 in 3D instead of giving it an offline multiplayer mode. :(

i hope polarised tech gets good/cheap enough that they start using that on TVs instead soon. glasses for that are cheap, light and wont need recharging.

Hyundai has a polarized 3D TV that's only available in Japan right now for about $4000. If you need a new pair of glasses for it, all you need to do I go see a 3D movie and bring home the glasses. ;)

Still, $4000 is a very expensive price to pay for a TV regardless of whether or not it does 3D, especially since there is currently no 3D content except a few PS3 games.

LG have one that Sky gives to pubs as part of promotion. they are doing a retail version but no price announced yet. still only on the biggest most expensive models with features noone really needs (and people like me actively dislike) bumping up the price.

i wouldn't worry about a lack of content. the investment in it has already been made. sports broadcasters have their 3D cameras. cinemas have their projectors that they want content for. CG movies can be rendered from a different viewpoint easily enough. The actual transmission of the content costs no more than a HD channel.
