Drama Pushing Daisies

I liked last night's episode, too. The interaction between Chuck and the Piemaker was just as charming as it was in the pilot. Chi McBride continues to be awesome, too.

I usually can't stand 'cute romances' like that, but it's been done so well in the first two episodes. I even liked the partition and glove bit in the car at the end. Seeing how they deal with what happened with Chuck's father should be good.

McBride is a scene-stealer.

I much prefer "cute romances" over the other kinds of romances that are all over every other primetime show. At least this one is kind of unique.

Oh, and Kristin Chenoweth's musical number was fun.

Yeah, the romance in this is something I should hate, but it works in this show. I'm still a little on the fence about the show, but I liked the second episode more than the first, probably because I knew what to expect this time.

I think those that have spoken against that type of interaction (which might be only me and af15) have just professed a general aversion to it, while saying how well it works here. To me, it's a surprise that I didn't change the channel 10 minutes after Ned and Chuck were reunited. I don't mind the cutesy stuff here ( I actually rather like it), but usually that syrupy, doe-eyed, deep-sighing, adorable kinda thing churns my stomach. Then again, I've been told that I'm dead inside.

I've been looking at the novel cutesy stuff like Ned putting the divider and hand-holding apparatus in the car and the holding their own hand but pretending it's the other person's as just genuinely clever and funny and the more generic doe eyes and deep sighing as 1) a sign that Ned and Chuck are both sheltered, innocent dorks, which is adorable, and 2) something of a satire of the melodramatic adolescent version of that stuff, which is funny.

It is both. You look at some parts of their dynamic and think "you guys are too old for this kind of stuff", but that's the hook. How well they execute it is what makes it work. Chuck and Ned can pull off the dorky vibe, while not coming off as clueless tools and it makes for an interesting pairing.

Having McBride as a more 'adult' character provides a good juxtaposition and sells it even more. For instance, his reaction in the pilot when Ned tells him to hug Chuck for him was great. The fact that he went along with it, even though he rolled his eyes, underscored it to me. It's hard to root against them, even if their budding romance seems a bit idealistic.

I think a lot of it is they also aren't overplaying the innocence for cheap laughs too. They aren't playing it like Adam Sandler as overgrown children throwing temper tanturms all the time, but as two people who were crippled emotionally at an early age becuase of a twist of fate, now they've found each other again and want to have that romance and emotional connection, but fate has put this dividing wall between them. In fact, the more I think about the more the sets and art direction makes sense, it has that same innocence to it.

Exactly, this is basically a fairy tale. In fairy tales, the heroes are always innocent, upstanding, morally good people. So Ned and Chuck's fairy tale romance actually works in the context.

Mister J's totally right about Emerson, too. His adult viewpoint is an excellent foil to Ned and Chuck, who very much live in their fairy tale. He makes for a great, rude intrusion of reality every so often. So does Kristin Chenoweth's character, in fact. She's a different perspective--an adult who longs for the fairy tale innocence of Ned and Chuck but ultimately can't have it.

I love the Tim Burton vibe, storybook atmosphere, and the blend of forensic investigation. Very unique.

It's funny, everybody says it has a Burtonesque quality to it, but Barry Sonnenfeld directed it and he's got his own impressive pedigree and skills. I guess he could be homaging Burton, since Burton's become something of the king of black fairy tales over the last few years.

Anyone know if this is still doing well ratings-wise? With the realization that Chuck and Journeyman are likely to be cancelled, i'm really hoping this sticks around for a while.

I can't imagine why people wouldn't want to watch such a fantastic show, though. Then again, I can't imagine why people would want to watch reality TV, which accounts for the biggest ratings hogs at this point.

Well, looks like all the hype and critical acclaim for Pushing Daisies worked. The show was not only the highest-rated new show in the 8pm slot this season, it was the third highest-rated new show of the year, period, right after Bionic Woman and Private Practice (this rating includes live viewing plus DVR stats).

I'm too lazy to properly analyze the second link, but I think the second episode took a dip as compared to the pilot (which had strong numbers), but still helped ABC take the #1 slot Wednesday night.

This show definately gets an A for originality and it is cleverly written but I can't say I was particularly interested in the second episode.

I love this show. It is my favorite of the season. I really didn't like Olive at the beginning...I wanted to since I like Chenoweth, but she was just annoying. This third episode really made me like her. Ned is my favorite though...hot.

My thoughts exactly. When I watched the first episode, I had to look it up online to see if Burton had a hand in it. The dialogue is witty and snappy. The actors pull it off briliantly. To think I almost passed on this show. I am glad they showed the first episode twice. It is my favorite new show of the year by far. Olive last night was awesome. The singing part could of come off poorly , but she was flawless.
